All of my icons have a link??

OK, I don't know how I did this but when I reinstalled XP all of my icons have a link attached and now I can not rename my files. Here is an example. CCleaner used to be under the icon. Now it says CCleaner.lnk..... When I to rename a file or picture it changes and I am unable to access the file.....

The .lnk or .jpg is the file extension that tells the Windows OS what it needs to do with the file. You can change the name ahead of the period without a problem (ex. change CCleaner.lnk to CrapCleaner.lnk), but change the file extension, and Windows will no longer be able to call the right program or action for the file. To hide the file extensions so you don't have to deal with them:

Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Place a check in the box beside Hide Extensions for Known File Types in the list displayed.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

 

You have some corrupt registry entries. Unzip this and then run it:

 

You might have to open with....and chose the app to unzip it.
