In XP when you click Start, All Programs and then one of the selections, it doesn't stay selected if you move the mouse up or down (only if you go to the right). I think this used to work in older Windows versions (3.1, 98, etc) and was nice in that you didn't have to be SO CAREFUL and steady to make sure you go EXACTLY horizontal (or you lose all sub selections). Do you know any way to change this in XP?

If you left click the master selection it helps it to remain relatively stable until you go right into the sub selections. But that said I agree with you - I think it has more to do with the speed of these latter day computers compared with their predecessors of yore. Price to pay for progress???

I just remembered the old Windows would keep the menu selected there forever once you clicked it no matter where you then moved the mouse (until mouse was next clicked). This was so much better for the user since it solved the typical problem of "overshooting" the menus with the mouse and also trying so hard to move the mouse EXACTLY horizontal keeping it within the menu item it's on (which takes extra time trying to be so careful) or you will lose all items selected so far and have to do it again. So processor speed isn't it although that may make it more difficult once you leave the menu item since it now reacts instantly (so you can't just move the mouse back and expect the last selected item you were over to be there).
