All this stuff ok to clean windows 98 system?

Hi there.....i'm helping my ex clean out her computer until she gets XP installed shortly, but by the sound of it it's well infected already. We bought the computer in 1998 and it had Norton on it but i'm embarrassed to say that we werent aware that you have had to update it frequently

As recommended on here i was just going to download and run the following on her system...

AVG
Ad_Aware
Spybot
Spyblaster
CCleaner

That should be ok to clean her sytem out for now should'nt it? I'll disable her Norton protection first before i do this. K my questions are....

1. Is this stuff ok to use on such an old system? Anything i should be aware of?

2. Today i heard that if you boot up in safe mode so that you can scan all files it opens up stuff like your registry too which is dodgy ground if you don't know what you're doing? Shall i try all the above without booting up in safe mode first and see if that helps? Don't want to knacker her computer up.

Your choice between AVG and Avast. I use Avast, lots use AVG. Run one or the other, is the usual advice.

Run Cleanup! and EmpTemp as well as CCleaner. All 3 work together in getting rid of stuff.
Each finds stuff the other/others miss, believe me.

Every one of those programs are free, most are available on MG as you will see by the link.
