Hi all, and thanks in advance for any help.

I'm experiencing a problem wherein attempts to play any sort of video on my system (Silverlight, Flash, .avi, .mpeg, and so on - streaming or from my hard disk) leads to hung/crashed applications. The problem happens at random - at least, I haven't noticed any correlations - and doesn't resolve until the system is rebooted.

Windows 7 Event Viewer is no help; the only events it records are the application hangs/crashes, and doesn't tell me what the underlying cause is.

I'm running the latest version of Adobe Flash (10.2), Microsoft Silverlight is up to date, all my drivers seem to work fine generally.

The video card seems to be working fine (not overheating or anything). I wish I had more information on which to base a guess/diagnosis, but it's pretty mysterious. If someone could point me in the right direction, that would be great!

    Thanks!

Hmm, let's try to get a baseline here :)

When did you first notice the problem? Have you updated to SP1 yet? Is W7 32 or 64-bit?

Can you list your hardware specs: motherboard make/model, graphics card make/model, RAM amount, etc.? Or, if a prebuilt, what make/model and is there any serial # on the machine?

    Wow, fast reply - thanks!

I first noticed the problem a while back - more than a month. I reinstalled Windows about two weeks ago, and didn't have problems after that until today.

Computer: Dell Studio 1537, about three years old.
    Serial #: HHSQLH1
    OS: Win 7 x64 SP1
    Motherboard: Dell Inc. 0P132H (U2E1)
GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon 3450 (256Mb). I've got the latest driver and Catalyst suite.
    RAM: 4GB

Lemme know any other info I can provide.

The reinstall was a format/install, not a repair install?

If you can revisit the Event Viewer and open the System and Application logs in turn, I'd like you to save both logs as the default file type, zip and attach the resulting logs, please?

BTW, the installation of Windows was a fresh install, not a repair install.

From what I can see, I think something was messed up during the latest Windows Updates, just a guess though - I got snowblind looking through the logs.

Haha, yeah, there sure are a lot of errors in there. Appreciate the effort and advice; I'll try to figure out which update (if any) is the culprit. Thanks!

Use a restore point before 22 April. Are the problems gone?
If so, turn off Auto Updates and manually install 1 update at a time. Work with the computer after installing an update and rebooting.
It will take time because April was a big patch month but it might be worth it to determine which update is causing the problem.

Unfortunately, by the time I read your post, I didn't have any restore points prior to April 22nd. In any event, this problem began happening a while ago (i.e. before April) so it's probably not a recent update. After the fresh install of Windows about two or three weeks ago, everything was fine again, so I suppose that an update could be the culprit, but it would have to be an older update that just wasn't installed until recently.

It occurs to me that the problem seems to happen only when the computer has been woken up from sleep mode.

I also reproduced a crash using Flash in Firefox; here's a link to the crash report.
