Would someone be so kind as to have a peek my HJT log. I have cleaned a substantial portion already. But I am suspicious of a few. Thanks!!!

Edit by chaslang: Inline log removed. Cleaning steps not run.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please do not post any logs especially HJT inline.

You still show signs of Virtumonde and Surfsidekick and other trojans.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

You only need to do what is covered in the READ & RUN ME. I will help you with the rest.

Or if desired, you can take a look at the Special Removal Procedures thread mentioned in the sticky.

I'm back and am following instructions as posted ... so far so good but

I am trying to run unlocker 1.7.7 to rid the PC of the remainder of Ssk specifically the "repair*.dll" portion. But I get the error "Error Debug Priviliges" I went to the website to access the FAQ but I am not sure what to do wrt getting debug priviliges. Can you help? I went to the follwoing site for the help

    http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

You have to have Administrator priviledges and you also must make sure the Security Policies for Admin are set to allow debug. That is if you run secpol.msc from the command prompt or from the Start, Run, box. Look at Local Policies and then User Rights Assignments. Make sure Debug Programs (under the Policy column) has the Administrators name in the (Security Setting column).

In many cases with SSK, those files can be easily removed and you do not need Unlocker.

    Hi chaslang,

Sorry about the delay.. the sleep stuff gets in the way.

I have followed the READ ME virtually to the letter and I really think I am almost clean. I had no major problems using the tools outlined. May I post my log? I do have a few suspicious entries.

You must attach three items as indicated in the READ ME:
    - Bitdefender online scan log
    - PandaActiveScan online scan log
    - HijackThis (make sure it is installed per the directions in step 7)

    chaslang,

I ran the READ ME without incident. I am "clean" according to the procedure but looking my HJT logfile I'm not so sure. But when I then go on-line to run bitdefender I have to do it in normal mode. As soon as I open IE it takes me to a "microsoft" site (I think) and hangs and then the browser re-directs start agin.

Is it possible to have you look at my HJT logfile without the bitdefender and Panda being run at this time?

Not really! Step 6 is part of the READ ME and you are saying you cannot run it.

Yes make sure you follow the directions in step 7 exactly and attach you HJT log.

    You're welcome.

Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'. On the page that opens, scroll down to Service Hosts (or if not found look for ServiceHost) ... then right click the entry, select 'Properties' and press 'Stop Service'. When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the 'Start-up Type' to 'Disabled'. Press 'OK' until you get back to Windows.

Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the "None of the above, just start the program" button at the bottom of the choices. At the lower right, click on the 'Config" button, and then the Misc tools' button ... select 'Delete an NT Service" ... copy/paste the following into the box that opens, and press "OK":

    Service Hosts

If that does not work try entering the short name: ServiceHost

Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please run HijackThis and click on the "Open the Misc Tools Section" button on the open page. Then select "Open process manager" on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click "Kill process". Then click yes.
    C:\windows\winsysupd.exe
    C:\windows\winsysban.exe

After killing all the above processes, click "Back".
Then please click "Scan" and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsysupd] C:\windows\winsysupd.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsysban] C:\windows\winsysban.exe
O23 - Service: Service Hosts (ServiceHost) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\shost.exe (file missing) <--- should already be gone due to above steps

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\windows\winsysupd.exe
    C:\windows\winsysban.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\shost.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).
Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and continue with the below. You have a Look 2 Me infection that we also need to fix.

Download, install, and update this trial of Spysweeper

Then run a scan with it and save the log and attach it here later but first do another reboot after running Spy Sweeper (if you have not already rebooted after running it).

Now attach a new HJT log and also the log from SpySweeper.

Make sure to tell us how things are working.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Okay! Just attach the logs when finished.

You may want to see if the online scans will run after doing those steps too.

    chaslang,

I have stopped the the service "Service Hosts". But when I go to "Delete an NT service" in HJT and type in "Service Hosts" or "ServiceHosts" it tells me that it is not found in the registry and to ensure that I am using a short name of the service. Suggestions???

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Read the instructions carefully. For short name, my instructions said ServiceHost
    not ServiceHosts

Note: if you found the Service using service.msc, the short name is shown there where you stopped and disabled the service. See the box labeled Service name:

yep.. you were right! "ServiceHost" worked

Now when I looked to kill process for winsysupd.exe and winsysban.exe they were not present in the list to kill. After that, I checked HJT and these two processes were not present in the log either. shost.exe is not present in the HJT either.

In safe mode I was able to remove winsysupd.exe but winsysban.exe and shost.exe were not present. /Prefetch was deleted too. I ran spysweeper and found some spyware. I went on-line to get the updates and was quickly filled with some spyware again.

It seems I still have the look2me parasite. I ran kill2me but it appears that it is not ridding my PC of it.

I have not yet run bitdefender or panda. How would you like me to proceeed from this point? I can supply the HJT log and Spysweer log if needed.

    Thanks!

I was too impatient in posting my previous post...

Spysweeper (when definitions were updated) did get rid of the look2me! HJT log show it gone. Is there more to follow through on killing look2me? At this stage I still need to run bd and Panda. Would you like to see the ss log and HJT log first before I go on-line to try my luck??

Complete the steps in message # 13.

Kill2me will not fix Look 2 Me Vx2 infections. It will not even find them. But Spy Sweeper will fix it.

Message #13 is complete noting the files not present in message #18. Here are the two logs.

    Thanks!!!

I don't know why you could not find some of the files I asked you to look for and delete. SpySweeper found them:

    4:03 PM: winsysupd[1].exe (ID = 233482)
    4:16 PM: winsysban[1].exe (ID = 233481)
    4:16 PM: winsysban.exe (ID = 233481)

At anyrate, your log is clean now. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks SO much!!! If I didn't have my job that I really enjoy I would love to do what you do. I find the cat/mouse game fascinating.

On behalf of my wife (it was her PC that was infected), thanks!
