Alright, who bought DOOM3 today?

I am hoping I have enough money left at the end of the week for a copy, but we'll see.


Impressions, opinions,etc? Come on people, somebody out there has to have purchased it today.

You will be looking in every corner worries if something is gonna jump out its very dark and keeps you very alert, definately not boring. They did an amazing job with the demons, I saw a opening in a wall and a imp came crawling out fast as all hell and jumped in ym face. If a game has me saying "HolySH^%" out loud then its a good game . Games dont scare me to easy

 

Bought my copy today at Best Buy for $55.00. Friday Circuit City has it on sale for $45.00. I will install it tomorrow and see how it compares with Far Cry.

I agree, so far 90% of the game is narrow dark passageways.

you can turn up the brightness. i have it about halfway up. its part of the mood of the game, the erie music and monsters poping out, and the dark lighting.
the game is better if you can run it on high detail. then you get light from muzzle flashes when you shoot. makes it a lot easier.
right now im on alpha labs section 4.

 

it looks good, but it's not that great, just another fps.

 

I enjoy it because its different than any other FPS. The Mood is great the lighting. I walked in the bathroom and looked in the mirror and all of the sudden everything went red and things were screaming, it was creepi, the a imp comes out at me. These aliens are creepy as hell, sounds are played with great, the music is always changing. Theres nothing bad about this at all. You may not like the mood or the setting but its definately not a bad game its pretty great, Multiplayer is pretty fun to, they remade some quake 2 maps which are pretty fun and the lights out map is a blast. Its nice to see something different, I dont know what else you could have expected for this game, Its definately lived up to its name. I dont know about not being able to hind behide stuff I do it all the time. This is the only game I have turned off after the first few levels in a loooong time.

P.S. you know you have a flashlight right? Just hit F

 

well I'm having a bit of a problem with the graphics
light = dark and you can clearly see the image being refreshed, resulting in portions of the screen being dark.
only does this with doom3, so it's gotta be something with Doom3 :/

(and yes, I know I have a flashlight.)

 

I had it in my hand, and halfway to the register I changed my mind. Decided to forego a game I'll probably play to completion once or twice and caught a movie instead. I've had FarCry sitting in the box for 2 months and I haven't installed it yet. Think I'm gonna do that today

Yes ID are undefiably genius's with graphics. But Doom3 mad beats Quake3, Quake 3 got old fast

 

the lighting and being able to play outdoors and stuff is why i like halo.....

 

I don't plan on picking up the game, just because I'm not big on solo FPS games. Maybe if the multiplayer was really fun, I'd decide to get it. For anyone that has played it, what's the multiplayer like? Is there cooperative play or only like death match fighting? I prolly will get the chance to play the game though, since a friend of mine picked it up

 

Multi is fun, they have complete mod support integrated already so it will definately get better, not to much right now just DM, TDM

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'm gonna pass on this one. I dig the huge outdoor maps on FarCry. Not sure I could go back to small enclosed quarters after playing that.

 

Remember Beserk? Well its back and its a pretty sweet effect, guy starts screaming and and vision gets all weird. Its pretty sweet. The teleporters are pretty freaky to.

THe big red thing you see, it is normally grey metal then it fired up, in the bottom of that there are a bunch of swirling metal plates and if you can get to the bottom you get beserk and it teleports you out. Remember the Frag chamber from quake 2? thats back in a doom 3 style map, its completely different but same comcept there is a big chamber with invisibility in the middle and a spot you can press a button to make a bunch of stuff happen that kills whoever is inside.

Installed today first impression. So this is the game so long awaited as the greatest game of all time. Garbage unless there is a patch to lighten up the game. It's so dark even after turning up the brightness all the way. In my opinion it's not for mood but to cover up lousy graphics. Of course it's hard to say because I can't see any graphics just very dark scenes. I hope it lightens up later in the game if not it's back to the store with it. This is nonsense. There is no comparison to Far Cry.

Wookie thank you for your comment. Are you playing the game and if so is it light enough to really see the graphics. Mine is not as I said I can't see well enough to know what kind of graphics it has. Only what I have read which I take with a grain of salt what is said by reviewers and advertisers. If you are then mabey you could tell me what your settings are. I just started the game so it could be that my ati 9800 pro or game settings are not set right for this game.

Dont you get why the darkness is there? Its the mood. Its not supposed to be lush open space. This isnt far cry, this isnt UT. Yes the original doom wasnt this way. If your looking for the original doom go play it, this is Doom3, the technology didnt exist in doom. Its not dark to cover up dark graphics, its dark so you CANT SEE WHAT LIES AHEAD. So you never know whats around the next corner. If you a predictable game where you turn your head and everything is in plain view then go play it. If your turning the brightness up you might as well be cheating. Its meant to be Dark, inside a station on a planet, not running around outside. Im running a crap machine. It still look pretty good on my 9600 radeon. The lighting is perfect as I see it. Most scary movies are based in the dark, you cant see the culprit the killer or whatever. Thats the whole point. Use the flashlight. Thats what its there for.
I for one think its pretty damn good game experience when the lights go out some creepy voice starts laughing and your getting attacked. It keep me on my feet. Im not getting sleepy cause I alwasy know where my enemy is and what to expect next. Have you even played past the first levels? SOme of the satanic stuff is amazing. You dont have to have killer graphics to enjoy this. im pretty damn satasfied at 640 resolution. This isnt a game made to show off graphics. Everything isnt gonna be lit up for your enjoyment. Its gonna be dark and gloomy like its supposed to be. This is a damn good game so far and if you dont like it then dont play it and dont put it down just skip over this thread and let the people who like it enjoy it.

 

Den look through this this thread there is a link to new Radeon drivers that incrase performance on the radeon. They work alot better.

 

sorry for the comment den but saying doom3 has crappy graphics is like saying 500HP is slow, jsut because you dont like the car the engine is in.

If you want a dark, eerie first person shooter, you should check out Painkiller.

Painkiller at least mixes up things......it has dark close hallways, closets, etc. but it also has huge rooms and even very large outside areas.

I don't mind dark tight areas in a game as long as that's not all the game is. It would have been neat if Doom3 would have put in a large glassed in forest or even let you put on a suit and wander around outside.

Of couse it's still early in the game.........maybe things will change but I doubt it.

 

i like the game, it is dark, but when u have your flashlight out you can see pretty good and it really looks nice!!!! but the darkness is to set the mood, and it does it very well, ive jumped a few times, at times it annoying when a room is totally dark and your trying to shoot at something in the dark, but it work, so far the story is not bad, and with what happened it has to be dark, and your on mars, do you think that its going to be so lush and bright as earth is? come on, if you guys watched the videos and things you shoulda known it was dark, and if u didn't like that you shouldn't of boughten it, but i like it and everyone is open to their own opinion

That is like saying 500HP in a car is slow because you dont like the car it is in. As in he dont like the graphics (or he thinks they are slow, to help you understand) because the way they are made to suit the mood of the game(which he doesnt like, as in he didnt like the car the engine was in.

Get it? He doesnt like the mood and play of the game, as in he doesnt like the brand car it is. So he said the car was slow, or the graphics were crappy. When it wasnt true.

that goes both ways. Because it doesnt have a lush environment thats pleasing on the eyes doesnt mean its a bad game.

But I dont see whats so hard to understand about the darkness being their for gameplay and mood and having nothing to do with the graphics.

I've been waiting a while for gamespot (not sure if you guys go there for your video game news or not) but they are very popular and have rated almost everygame. They gave Doom 3 an 8.5/10 which is considered great in there terms. i think before the game came out people were thinking it was going to get like a 9.5 or something, just goes to show that MA is probably right on his rating.

I just picked it up on sale at my local computer store. I enjoy playing a variety of games. I know what to expect from Doom 3, just like I know what to expect from FarCry. When I am in the mood for dark hallways where things jump out at me, I'll play Doom 3. If I'm in the mood for sneaking around in the shadows, I'll play Thief 3. If I'm in the mood for tropical shootouts, I'll play FarCry. If I am in the mood for just running around shooting stuff I'll play UT2K4. If I am in the mood for some MMORPG fun, I'll play World of Warcraft (or Asheron's Call 2 "gasp!"). It's all good. I love video games and I'm thankful for the variety.

 

I think the problem is the setting they chose. If it were set somewhere else but an alien planet, they could have easily done some AWSOME outdoor like medival village style levels. Or forests, forests would be cool. Not tropical forests but creepy forests where imps jumped down from above the treetops.

 

ok, if you guys think this doesn't that good graphics, your are just insane, i mean if u really have to, turn on god mode, walk around with your flashlight, stare at the zombie attacking u and its pretty amazing how well everything really is, i didn't even realize the little details they include until i played around with god mode, and it is absolutly amazing, i mean if u dont like the darkness that much then this game probably isn't your game, so go ahead and crawl under your blanket, turn on some cartoons and be happy while waiting for the game that is right for you, if you dont like play it with some cheats, its kinda funny, trying to bash them with the flash light, lol

but you know, i think there is glitches, cause like a lot of times its hard to hit them with the flashlight, like the zombies with smgs are so hard to hit, its like u can't get close enough because their gun sticks out to far which i find absolutly stupid, and anyone that uses god mode will probably realize this and it just kinda brings the games funnes down a little bit for me, of course i rarely use cheats just for fun but when i wanna go on a flashlight ramage and can't kill some of them its just annoying!!!!


also, i used a cheat to spawn on of the bosses, i beleive it was the guardian, but its attack is like it jumps a little and theres like fire all around and holy crap, my fps dropped to like 4, i dont know if its because i was in a very small area and the monster like didn't fit or what, but it was insane, so chopy, amazing graphics but worst way to view them


does anyone know if there are tweeks you can do to improve your fps, like in CS i know there are a bunch of different commands i entered and it raised my fps fro 60 to 100, so i was wondering if i could do that on here too!!! that way when i finally do make it to that boss i wont die jsut because of fps lag, i mean i have a radeon 9800 XT and i turned my graphics quality to normal and it was still just as bad, so anyone know if there are any and what they are????

 

Check the beginning of the thread there is a link to some beta ATI driver, I tried them and they seemed to help. My Friend who is home after surgery and hasnt had anything to do played for like 16 hours straight and beat it, he said hell and the end are absolutely amazing and the best looking part of the game.
