...running XPHome,sp2. Located in C:\Program files. Its always empty, plus Windows restores it if you delete it. I dont tamper with it any longer, but what's its sgnificance, anyone know?

It will appear empty but there are probably hidden files in it. Just like the xerox folder in your C:\Program Files ... Although alta may be associated with a program you installed or a virus.

If it is spyware, than when you delete, entries in the registry could re-create it.

Do you have any spyware detection software like Ad-aware or Spybot?

I'm totally satisfied with my anti virus and anti spyware programs. I feel okay about it; I run AdAware se, Spybot S&D, Avert Stinger, CWShredder, CCleaner, and just installed SpywareBlaster. Gonna delete it once more and see if it gets restored. We'll see.

CORRECTION...the alta folder actually appears in C:\documents and settings\application data. Still wondering what its purpose is, though I currently have it deleted. I've restarted and so far it hasnt returned. None of my scans recognize it as adware or a threat. Anyone else know?
