Alternates to Paint?

I like Paint. I use it a lot for various projects, but it has some serious deficiencies. The two big issues is resolution (each pixel is around .01") and dimensional accuracy (a inch is 104% of what it should be). Given this wasn’t what the program was designed for it does a pretty good job. Are BMPs a fixed standard in terms of size, or is this only in relation to Paint?

Printers are very accurate. My HP LaserJet can do 600DPI, and this isn’t too unusual for any make of printer. Back when I was programming individual dots on my dot matrix I found the accuracy to be very high.

What I need is a drawing program (free or very cheap) that can print dimensionally accurate drawings (where 1 inch equals 1 inch). I would like it to be as simple as Paint, but with higher resolution and accuracy. It would also need to handle bmp files (I know they are non preferred, but they are the base standard).

So what other graphics programs are out there that can do this?

    Thanks.

I am unsure if it will meet your requirements but I received a freeware paint program on the coverdisk of Computer SHOPPER magazine recently called `project dogwaffle 1.2`. Its a lot better than paint but I am unsure if it will do exactly what you want it too. Im sure you will find it in one of the freeware sites. Its worth downloading and checking out to see if it is good for you. ;)

I tried DL Paint.Net, all 51.5 Meg of it. Then I spotted the XP requirement, I'm on a 98SE computer.

I'm currently working on GIMP right now, from the source. Their server sure was fast, 105KB/Sec. Nice. Thanks, and I'll let you know how it goes.

Sorry, I didn't think about the XP requirement... which Gimp are you getting?
Regular Gimp is nice, but the interface with GimpShop seems a little more like other apps (PhotoShop)...

Stable GIMP. 2.06? Don't know the number, but have the files on the hard disk, just need to install them. The one on MG introduced itself as the unstable version, so I backed off and went for the source.

Actually, the newest stable version of The GIMP is 2.2. Did you also download the GTK Runtime Environment? Because you have to have that, too. And if you want the help files, you have to download them separately, as well.

Not sure if this will meet your needs but I use HyperSnap-DX v4.52.03. Older versions are free but require registration. It also works on 98SE.

    Hope this helps

    Good Luck
