Hey guys, do any of you know of a good alternative FREE Spyware/Malware scanner that is better than Superantispyware ? I'm asking because I use both Malwarebytes Free and SAS Free and any time I get slow I run them and Mbam seems to catch the malware or P.U.P., but SAS just always catches Tracking Cookies. I run SAS first and nothing is caught but Mbam always will find the infection. Any ideas or am I already using the best ?

I dumped SAS years ago. I run MBAM active ($$$ version) and SpywareBlaster, which is passive and prevents tracking cookies from getting on the computer so no cleanup needed. Both together seems to have protected me for quite a few years.

Thanks plodr, SAS has worked real good for me when I needed it, but lately it just seems to keep missing infections. Like I said, I run SAS first and nothing shows up , but then Mbam finds something almost every time. Thanks again.

While I have this thread open, what are your thoughts on Spyware Terminator ? I always get mixed reviews on it. Good or Bad ?

I never used Spyware Terminator so I can't offer any input, sorry.

After having had SAS for years I dumped it as well quite a few months ago because it never found anything for many, many years. Must have been because I also have SpywareBlaster. MBAM free never finds anything either. Avast! free is also on my machine and never caught anything to-date, not even a false positive. Sometimes that makes me think that these software are not doing their job! But then I'm also very careful in browsing the net and download only from MG, or if not available here, from the authors' sites.

If you should ever stumble onto a bad web site, then you'll see Avast! spring into action. It's happened to me.

Speaking of spring, how much longer ... ?

(We received a small layer of freezing rain overnight... the kids will be pleased to stomp around on crunchy grass for a little while, but I regret our cold weather with absolutely nothing to play in! No snow, just cold and ice. Ugh. SEND SNOW or let us go back to 70 degrees!)

I am not as diligent as I should be, but with our paid AVs, I can build a monthly Boot CD for a full 'scan' and I feel better doing that although 'safe browsing' still trumps all. One of the vendors has an on-line update for their boot-CD - which is pretty terrific to build an disk-based OS capable of loading generic drivers sufficient for LAN and IP support. Wanna bet how secure THAT connection is, though? Yeah...hopefully it's hardwired to that one server-group and no ISP is ever hacked (cough cough, nudge nudge).

This is a slower process, but that's why God invented The Long Lunch. Or overnights.

    Hi

Tracking cookies are not malware and sadly SAS labels them as such, so wouldn't worry about cookies.

Various malware scanners will dependant on their malware definition files, find different things, this is normal... which is why some users run both MBAM and SAS to double check their systems.

personally either is fine and I run both, but if they are finding malware aka PUPs then you have to review your surfing habits and software installs as a site/s or app is adding the PUP reference.

Hey DavidGP, on my computer I was testing software and it affected my performance, and I ran SAS and it only found tracking cookies, but Mbam found the P.U.P.. Plus when I work on other computers I run both of them with the same results, that's why I was asking because it seemed like SAS was missing stuff every time, and Mbam was the only one doing what it's supposed to do.

Hi Nick, cheers for the info and update

What was the PUP that MBAM found? curious now.

I do like MBAM as its a really useful piece of anti-malware/security kit to add to any PC.

What other security software do you have installed also and on what Windows version and Service Pack?

Stick with MBAM. I don't see SAS recommended by any malware fighter. The PUP could have come along with a bundled installer. As David mentioned check MBAM the log.
    Cheers

DavidGP, the P.U.P was, P.U.P.Optional.Spigot.A, at the moment I'm still on XP Pro SP3. I run Avast Free, Malwarebytes Free, and Spywareblaster on the recommendation from plodr. I found the infection while running a routine scan, and I only download from MG.

Sikvik. I also noticed the lack of SAS among the Malware fighters.

Seems to me that a few years ago, people were saying that SuperAntispyware would find malware
    more often than Malwarebytes Anti-malware.

Over time, performance of security software changes and some products fall behind,
so it is a good idea to watch reviews and reevaluate your protection.
