After being informed that Ad-Aware Personal SE no longer was supported, I installed Ad-Aware 2007. Now my system seems extra slow. Don't know if it is because of Ad-Aware, but am wondering if there are good, free, alternatives to Ad-Aware that you would recommend. Thanks.

I was going to recommend Spyware Terminator also. Comodo's BOClean is good too, SpyBot Search-n-Destroy is popular, Tenebril Software has a free version of SpyCatcher that is pretty good too.... here's some links:
    Comodo BOClean http://www.majorgeeks.com/Comodo_BOClean_Anti-Malware_d5616.html
    SpyBot http://www.majorgeeks.com/SpyBot-Search_&_Destroy_Tools_d2471.html
SpyCatcher (free version) http://www.tenebril.com/consumer/spyware/spycatcher-express.php (the paid version has a kind of low rating here at MG, but I've had good results with the free one)

It continues to be a very good app. Follow my link below to remove the bloatware from the 2007 version that you don't need unless you plan to buy the full version at some point.

Spybot Search & Destroy is also a very good program, I have noted that it almost always finds more stuff then ad-aware 2007. It is also freeware.

Thanks for all the replies. I now have some alternatives to check out.

Lev, I was wondering if your bloat removing process would work on Win 2000, SP4? What differences, if any, is there in the process?

You could certainly run up to and including Step #6 of the process without issue. I am uncertain after that having not attempted to work it through with 2000. My advice would be make a restore point and proceed with caution.

If I'm not mistaken, you can chose to not install the toolbar during setup, or it can be uninstalled later. I run Spyware Terminator on a Win2000 PC and it works great; I've never had an issue and the Crawler toolbar is not installed.

the toolbar is optional on first install, same as the web security guard,
i've had ST running for about 6 months now with numerous updates with no probs at all with the toolbar trying to sneak in

hutchfred, I did it on win2K, SP4 and rollup 1 and it worked okay.
I did later remove AdAware because I still didn't like it.
    I've switched to SuperAntiSpyware.

If you need help translating some of the steps from XP to 2K, give a yell and I'll tell you what I did.
