Is there an alternative to http? And if so, who uses it? Anyone?

    That's a pretty broad question.

Are you asking if there is something different to use for building websites or for viewing them?

All websites have to be viewed in the code that they are written.

There are different types of webserver software and different methods of building pages. HTML is present in almost all of them.

It would be kind of hard, since it stands for "Hypertext Transfer Protocol." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Http They would have to redesign the whole World Wide Web, if they ever came up with a different standard to serve up web pages.

Now of course, there is this little gem http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPDY proposed by Google, which would put the web in their court, and guess what. It would end up allowing them to monopolize the web and set standards, that they would require you to only use their web browsers, etc.. No thanks.
