Am I crying in the Wilderness? IE error on page

I posted a similar question days ago and about 50 people have read it but there has not been ONE RESPONSE. Is this totally unheard of???

I have Windows 98 and Internet Explorer 6. I fixed a Windows 98 problem I had by getting rid of DW.exe, msbb.exe, nCase, etc. and installing Ad-Aware. That did nothing tho' to fix my IE problem. I have McAfee running constantly also.

The biggest problem that I've had for a couple of weeks is that page after page on the web is loaded with the yellow error sign at the bottom and "Done, but with error on the
page" or simply "error on page" and a lot of the words may be gibberish or what is the most obvious is I can't do a search on that page, or it won't open a drop-down menu,
other items are obviously not loaded on the page, etc. If it's just a page with facts, the page is displayed fine. If they are complicated pages they consistently do not
    download correctly.

HOWEVER, the other day I stumbled across a newsgroup item that talked about IE repair that said to go to Start, Run, and type

    rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

and I did and hit it to run REPAIR and it did and everything seemed great when I went to the same pages with Internet Explorer that didn't open right previously.

BUT -- the next day, all those same pages were opening with the same ERROR ON PAGE note -- thus, I can't get to hotmail, I can't open all the info on most websites, I can't get to support.microsoft.com/newsgroups and look for the answers to my previously posted question on this same topic because that's where everything is filled with 20% and other signs in the message, etc.

"Refresh" never works, "restarting" never works, intermittently it has worked to go back and run the repair IE thing but now only once in awhile. Today IE worked when the computer came on and later in the day when I logged back on (without turning the computer off in
between) the same IE pages loaded with the error!!) I tried to post a new message hours ago and this box came up but I couldn't type anything in it until this try.

Frankly, I'm not surprised no one responded. You're describing something I've neither seen nor heard of in many years of experience with IE versions. Fortunately, there are others who HAVE seen or heard of what you describe.

Try this page from Snakefoot, a member here, pegg.
    5. Repair Internet Explorer when it's acting weird
Scroll down to number 5. (Repair...). There's some good info there, including a much more interesting version of what you said you found and tried (the setupwbv.dll re-registration). I'd go through the whole section and work through every step. Be careful to read and understand every step thoroughly, and ASK SNAKEFOOT if you have problems with anything there.

It can't hurt to try the whole package.

Let us know what happens. If this happens again and you've found the cure, we should know about your experience with it, so that we can help other victims of this mess.

Seems to me that one of your FIRST steps should be to get rid of the index.dat that's in your Temp Inte Files folder. You know, no doubt, that getting rid of that thing can only be done at next boot, but there are lots of bat files available out there that will do it for you. It's an incredibly important file for IE, and yet it's very easily corrupted. Try using DelLater if you want a tiny program to help you. Read about and Download DelLater HERE.

The only time you'll get that error is if there is a script error on the page.
So make sure that you don't have anything running that is blocking the scripts from running (JavaScript or VBScript). Do what xflat suggested and check your browsers security settings, set them to default.

Make sure you've got all the patches for Windows as well.

Hey, Kodo, I'm from little old Fulton, NY - glad to see you're from Syracuse.

#1) I had to ask the webguys to post my reply for me because that's another problem I'm having. I read your answers, hit reply, the page came up but I couldn't type in the message box -- does that make sense to anyone?
#2) Wisewiz -- I've been able to do most of what you advised tho' I'll have to contact snakefoot because I didn't understand how to do everything under "Repair Internet Explorer when it's acting weird" (I am NOT a computer geek -- sorry).
#3) Wisewiz - I don't understand how I can get rid of the index.dat file if it's "incredibly important for IE". It says I'm not supposed to delete it.???
    #4) Kodo - you wrote:
So make sure that you don't have anything running that is blocking the scripts from running (JavaScript or VBScript).

    How do I do that?

#5) xflat - great advice, but what Wisewiz had about Snakefoot and the IE repair had me go in and check all the security and privacy settings, etc. and set them to default.

#6) .[/QUOTE] Make sure you've got all the patches for Windows as well. I have always been up to date with my Windows patches except I haven't been able to check them or download ANY for the last month because of these errors.

Re #2: Ask, and ye shall receive. Answers, that is. He's interested in helping.
If you don't understand the answers from him, try us.
Re #3: You betcha. The very nanosecond you try to open IE (AFTER you've succeeded in deleting index.dat), Windows will create a brand spanking NEW index.dat in that folder, and IF you see it (most users never do) and can READ it (most users never can), you'll see that although it is a 32KB file when it's new, it has nothing in it.

When it gets corrupted, it can't be fixed; it has to be trashed and replaced. Not a bad idea anyway, cuz it's a notorious tracker of your Internet activity, and the only way to make its information absolutely unavailable to MS is to dump it and make IE build a new one.

I really think you need to reinstall internet explorer, if you are not able to download the iexplore.exe yourself then get it by cdrom/mail from a friend.

If you are on a low bandwidth connection then you can try fold your hand in prayer and download this script engine update 5.6..

Also if you have any questions about the checkpoints I have listed, then please ask away.

Also Also :) try Spybot as it sometimes finds stuff which AdAware doesn't find.

Also Also Also ;) you could try to UNcheck Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart) in Internet Options... -> Advanced-tab

On the repair page it says that you should check that the HOSTS file doesn't contains any entries, so the idea is that you should empty the HOSTS file for entries that it might contain. The link describing the HOSTS file is only provided to explain what the HOSTS file can be used to, it is not part of the repair situation.
The domain name is the "address" you type in your iexplorer (Ex. www.google.com)
The IP Address is the numerical value the domain name is resolved to. (Ex. 216.239.59.99)
My recommendation is to skip over this checkpoint, as the effects you are experiencing doesn't sound like they are caused by entries in your HOSTS file.

This is okay, it should show a popup about "succeeded" for each file.

The restore of DLLs requires that you have a place to restore the DLLs from. Since IE 6.0 isn't part of the default Win98 install, then I don't you can perform this step without having the IE 6.0 install files. And if you should have those files, then I recommend you do a complete reinstall of Internet Explorer.
The mcrepair.exe thing is just an update created by Microsoft which restores certain DLLs.

Unchecking "Display notification...." option prevents Internet Explorer from showing a popup for each script error on the page you load.
It is recommeded to have this option unchecked, as the popups are rather annoying.

Not that experienced with uninstalling/reinstalling Internet Explorer, but I would guess it would allow you to reinstall Internet Explorer on top of it self. If not then here is an article from Microsoft about how to uninstall Internet Explorer 6.0 (Add/Remove in the Control Panel):

Maybe this Google Groups post can help ya.

This just came to my mind maybe you want to check the following:

    1. Internet Options...
    2. Generelt-tab
    3. Accessibility-button
    4. Make sure that all check boxes are cleared in the window that pops up.

I think a mail to the website hosting the file would have better effect. Also the website is just part of a signature and is not really related to the post about dellater.exe. Also also many AntiVira programs makes warnings about certain programs because they have virus like behavior inside, though they are "friendly" enough, but I haven't bothered looking into what "Univ.script/99" is.

There are several places where IE6 makes use of IE5 registry entries and I wouldn't be surprised that for sake of compatibility that it would also reuse the IE5 internet cache when doing an upgrade.

    I went to:
http://www.diamondcs.com.au . dellater.exe was in C:unzipped but I actually figured out how to move it and what it meant when it said:
"place dellater.exe in the root. In the run box type
c:\dellater C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat -- A screen then announced the file is marked for deletion on the next boot." I am very proud of myself (pat on the back)

HOWEVER -- it didn't fix anything obvious and web pages are still coming up with "done, error on the page".

Well it just seemed you were able to use email, but I think this issue can wait until you have gotten something up running

Instead of using Windows Update for getting updates then you could try to get the updates directly (If you can't get the below urls to work either, then you need to find out if you are using IE6 or IE6 ServicePack1, so we can find the direct links to the actual exe-files):

    Cumulative Update for IE
    Iexplore.exe for complete reinstall

Jim's suggestion of Moziila could be second to last option(reinstall), as it would allow you to browse websites for help more easily (Though some sites doesn't work with Mozilla eventhough they are few).

Phew! What a sad marathon for the poor Guy/Gal.
If it were me I'd save everything needed and Format and start again.
As a Windows98Se user (if it aint broke don't upgrade) and a frustrated IE5 then 6 user I finally gave up IE in disgust and cuddled up to Opera. Present version in use is .7. I won't go back to IE again although it still sits there on my desktop. I'm also led to believe thru this and other forums that there are equivalent INet navigators around so why bother with M$ offerings if they are not doing what you require of them? IE5 and IE6 hated me and drove me to an alternative. Conversely through it all W98se cracks on and the lesson with that OS is keep the bugger squeaky clean or watch out.
As for cleaning out index.dat files in IE here's the only one I have used and which works for IE

    I'll give it a try

OK -- I give up -- I installed MOZILLA and now the webpages load properly and I can (obviously) post replies to the messages here now.

HOWEVER - I'd like to know what how I can "turn off 123 ghost pop up stopper" (if I even have it" since I still have IE -- I'll probably uninstall IE 6 and just go back to the old version and see what happens.

NEW QUESTION: since I'd never heard of Mozilla before, any problems I should know about it. It seems EXTREMEMLY SLOWWWW but that could just be all the stuff I've had to load into it with the download (?)

more "Done with error on page" than before

I did the regsvr32 urlmon.dll that someone told me to do but now I've got more IE problems. Would that be related? After singing the praises of how we seemed to fix IE's various problems, now almost every page I go to says "done, with error on page" including this one.

When I double click on the error message I get several different messages:
This first one if my company's web site -- the fonts were all wrong and across the top gray bar is supposed to be a listing that you can click on that will take you to different pages. None of that even showed up on the gray bar. There were two error messages:
    Line:87
    Char: 1
    Error: Object Expected
    Code: 0
    URL: http://www.waterjetconnection.com

    Line: 2
    Char: 2
    Error: Expected 1/1
    Code: 0
URL: This error came up over and over again -- on all the sites with other error messages

    Line:45
    Char: 2
    Error: Syntax Error
    Code: 0

    Line: 2
    Char: 1

    Yes and NO

Yes - I uninstalled IE6 and went back to my original IE -- scary thing for me to do but see how trusting I am. I'll do anything your strangers tell me to do (note, I didn't say "strange" , but "strangers" ;) ) - then I went back and loaded IE6 again.

No -- I guess I meant to ask what you meant by "you can try fold your hand in prayer and download this script engine update 5.6."

It does sound like something I should run so hey, I'll run it now.

  28. pegg

    script engine

OOPS -- actually - I did install scr56en.exe back on Feb. 16 (see, I'm very obedient).

?? - Once I install it is that all I need to do? Or do I need to "run" it or do something else with it?

  29. snakefoot

Never heard anything about you actually uninstalling and installing IE6.
Did the problems continue right after the reinstall ? or did they reappear after af while ?
Did you go to windows update after the reinstall ?

Heheh now I just have to convince you that the problems you are experiencing is caused by the money on your bank account, and if you transfer all your money to my bank account then it will allow me to see if there is anything wrong with your money ;)

I tried to say that it was shot in the dark and that it would be very uncertain that it would actually solve your problems, but maybe with the help of higher powers then it might be solved.

  30. snakefoot

    snakefoot Sergeant Major

The thought of having to convince people to follow my suggestions haven't come to my mind until now. Guess I have been lucky until now :)
It is an update for Internet Explorer, by running the exe-file, then you are actually applying the update. The update should take effect right away, though it might ask you to restart Windows 98.

  31. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

So sorry, I'm so wordy and have bothered so many, didn't realize I didn't post that info. :D

The problems showed up several days AFTER the install. I could not get any critical update to do anything for days after that -- but I hadn't had an update probably for a couple of months...the page would just sit there saying it needed to check but never would "scan the computer" or even go to 0%. Finally someone told me to delete temp. internet files and offline contents and it would "force" the download (or something) and it finally worked. There were 3 critical updates waiting...

So -- what is the significance that IE was fine for several days, I could go to these 4 or 5 pages I go to all the time and everything loaded fine and now those same ones load with "done, error on page"

Come on MAJOR GEEKS -- someone out there must have seen this before. ;)

  32. snakefoot

Think last time I saw something like this the solution was called "backup everything and reinstall windows" (Like a clever fellow noted several posts ago).

Robert said: If it were me I'd save everything needed and Format and start again.

And yep, didn't do it (don't know what "format" means) cause I went ahead and uninstalled IE6. Now, I know how important "backups" are and everyone says they're easy. I've done them on the computer and I've put my documents on a CD but I am clueless about "reinstalling windows"

So if no one is fed up with my ignorance, can someone enlighten me once again?

Well Pegg if you have gotten fed up with troubleshooting your problem and I don't blame you as I now have a very short attention spam with OS problems not that I get any unless I've been messing with stuff.. however I have a clone of my XP basic + tweaks install so its easy for me to re-install.......

IF you have everything backed up... Internets Favorites, Email Addresses/Emails, All Documents and personal info + important programs and downloads then yes a reformat and install is the way to go.. start afresh!

And without me typing all the instructions out I have a link to hand for this very occasion............ two methods... the second one is your best bet ( you will need to have a bootdisk to hand, if you don;t have one then holler and we will show you how )

    http://www.putergeek.com/win98_install/

  38. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

    bootdisk

OK -- I went to that site and printed out several pages of info. I also made a win98 boot disk image on a floppy disk (with FAT32 support) even though I have no idea what that means.

It said: it will format the disk, and copy the bootdisk image to it. When done, I suggest that you immediately test your new bootdisk to make sure it works properly and can read a CD.

OK - I was going to post the question on their site but they seem to have WAY LESS activity than this site so here goes...How do I test the new bootdisk?
How do I know if it can read a CD?

  39. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

Another strange question: I don't have a windows 98 CD. Windows 95 came installed on the computer and I upgraded to windows 98 online. So now what? Is that was the bootdisk image is supposed to replace?

ALSO: I had one CD-Rom drive but then bought another one -- so I have one on d and e drive. Since doing that, when the computer starts up, as the first screen comes up it says "no CD drives found" even tho' I have two and can use both fine.
If I go to "my computer and click on D: or E: it will say D:\is not accessible, The device is not ready.
If I click on the shortcut at the bottom of the screen it will say "the drive or network connection that the shortcut 'CD-Rom Disc.lnk' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available & try again."
I can get the CD-Rom to work when I insert a game or other program and then right click on the shortcut and hit open or find autorun or something...but it can be tricky.

I'm ASKING this because these instructions for formatting, reinstalling...talk about making sure the computer can read from the CD and I'm wondering (even if I had a CD) if this will be a problem.

If you don't have the original install cd for Windows 98 (Or 95) then it is not possible to reinstall Windows. (Unless you have the install files placed on your HDD, try to search if you have any "*.cab" files on your C:-Drive)

I don't really understand getting Windows 98 online, how did you perform that act ? (Maybe you should just get it again)

My best advice is to get some one you know, which knows something about computer to come to your place and fix all your problems.

OK - I didn't think I could install this either without an actual CD. I do NOT have any .cab files on my C: drive

Of course you don't understand because I said something STUPID. Windows 98 came installed on the computer with Internet Explorer 5. I upgraded IE5 to IE6. When I uninstalled IE6 my computer went back to IE5 and so I went "online" and upgraded again.

Yeah, about 1/2 hour ago I talked to someone who knows someone who can probably come over and show me what to do (doesn't that make all of you breathe a sigh of relief) :D
