    Greetings!

I have an issue with my HP DVD Writer 630c. It seems to not function at all...will not even open. The device manager shows it is there with no problems noted...

I am running XP Home on an HP Pavilion a810n with 1 gig ram, 160 gig HDD. I run avast and KPF.

    Any ideas? Need more info??

    Thanks

First check the drive is working, power up the computer into bios usually del or F2,see if your motherboard recognises the drive, dma mode is enabled, then while in bios check the drive opens and closes ok

Could be a problem with windows stopping the drive from opening or two programs battling for control of the drive such as incd or other burning software so remove any you dont use

check event viewer in system and applications for errors relating to the drive Control Panel\admin tools\event viewer, try opening the drive with eject and using my computer then go to event veiwer and look for errors, another thing to try cnt\alt\del as soon as windows has finshed loading the desktop,go to processes then press eject see what processes pop up 'if any' and start using the cpu add with your next post

next would be to update your firmware for the drive,go to the manufacturers site support section and see ifs theres updated firmware, this is the same as upadting the bios,if done wrong will perminantly disable the drive so check the filename of the firmware matches your drive exactly

    :)

    Ok...

Nothing happens...no errors nothing comes up in the processes or event log.

It doesnt even try to open. Push the eject button...no light comes on...no noise...nothing.

Tried the firmware from HP Goes thru the initialization of the update then gets an error (null) cannot complete the firmware update.

It seems like it is not even there (the drive) but shows up in the bios and the device manager.

I am at a loss for what to try next...
