I have been recently looking to *build* a gaming pc for myself. After a few days of researching, I have made a list of nicely priced items in which I'd like to buy. I've talked to a few of my friends, and they said the parts should work well together, but I might need to buy another cooling appliance. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had time to run through the list and tell me what I should do to correct it. Thanks. I'm only looking to spend maybe $1,300 or $1,400 at max.

Consider remaking your pc, for 1400$ you can build yourself 100x better PC then that.

I recently did a shop with x-40-x we came up with this computer for $780-

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=66708

Gaming wise the 6800 will blow the 9800 away with almost double the performance

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=66708

The cpu will also match the speed of a p43.2,although a different core"venice" it is slightly better performing than the 3000"winchester"they also run cooler than intels.

For about $1100 with you with your OS,soundcard, speakers and monitor"you could probably knock another 50-100$ If you search through newegg for those aswell"

Giving you an extra 3-400$ to make it even faster probably adding another 25%-50% I you spend wisely,You could actually consider an sli rig if so it will be close to 3 times the performance of the original parts you have chosen :)

Not sure what happened to my links in the last post but here are the links the first compares the nvidia6800 with the ATI9800 almost double the performance

    http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041004/vga_charts-06.html

The second compares the performance of the a64 with the p4 in a gaming enviroment,as you can see the mid level a64's are able to beat any intel and ther entry level a64's are able to give the hyper expensive intels a run for thier money

Alright man. I'm trying to get a PC for games such as...Doom 3, Half-Life 2, World of Warcraft, EverQuest 2, and such games of those requirements. I appreciate the help.

I deffinately feel incredibly stupid. I've been reading forums, and have spoken to a few friends from the online gaming community, and I guess they aren't as comp. smart as you guys. I appreciate the help, but I still have no idea what you mean by some terms, so I'll just google for some "great" pc gaming builds.

Well, I have AOL instant messanger. My name is "Acigaretteandsex" if you have it you can IM me. I have yahoo messanger as "thedividedwall". I'd really like a nice machine that will give me the options to really kick a games ass. My friend has an alienware pc that costed I think around $5,000...and he has claimed that the pc he built for just nearly $1,500 was just as good if not better. I'm looking to spend MAX $1,400.

No need for IM,it defeats the purpose of the forum,if someone else wanted to know what to spend $1400 on I or someone else will have to communicate it all again,if you know what I mean ;)

Right I'll get shopping! This will prob take about 20 mins!

True true. Alright so...my plan was this:

    1) Have a computer capable of running the most recent games with ease.
    2) Be able to play DVDs.
    3) Have enough hard drive space to last me a good bit(was thinking 300).

Sorry, very new into the PC building. Not sure which parts co-exist better together and what not.

I dont know what newegg are playing at but none of my links will work,to say the least I'm p£$%$& (&^ ,what a waste of time,

Off memory I went for an asus deluxe sli 39 mobo,AMD 64 3500 "venice" core,BFG 6800gt,enermax noisetaker 480watt,it came to about $1000,leaving you about $500 to choose a case, monitor, soundcard and keyboard and mouse. :( :mad:Oh yeh I fit a harddrive in and a copy of xp home in

Alright so...I got the list of items written down and their prices. I appreciate the help man. I guess the keyboard/mouse/moniter can be rather cheap tohold me for a bit. What do you recommend for a case?

Rikky Wile E. Coyote - One of a kind

Yes much better I may of over spent in a few areas, but the key points you must have in a new gaming build. An a64 socket 939 cpu the fastest cheapest chip atm,an nforce 4 socket 939 pci express mobo with sli,6800,6800gt or 6800ultra video card in pci express form,a good psu the enermax noisetakers are great atm. That takes care of the visuals, you also need a good case with good airflow at least two fans ,an intake and exaust.
The harddrive Ideally you need a 10000 rpm harddrive in with a SATA connector, the western digital caviar are good drives, plextor dvd/cdrom burner combi.A nice monitor I like the crt NEC monitors they do well in reviews,it just depends how big you wanna go and how much cash you have left.

The new audigys are always a good buy, keyboard and mouse of your style. If you can try and get your parts from one retailer, that way they all come on the same day and you can get building, also get an oem copy of windows to save cash. :)

Whats an "oem" copy of windows?

First of all the case is to your taste I'm a minimalist,I choose the straight black or silver "sony" kind of look like a silver mp3 player or something,I saw this case just browsing through

Lian Li PC-65B Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail
    Model #: PC-65B
    Item #: N82E16811112040

4 fans including a top blower, that will keep everything cool,an OEM product is a product designed for shops to buy to stick into thier own computers instead of the retail versions the ones with a big fancy cardboard windows box and a load of crap inside, instead its just a cd packet with a disk and the activation code, which is all you need :)

BTW I left out memory in my previous post, you need two sticks 512 in a matched pair to make use of dual channel, you need memory at 200mhz or called pc 3200.The importabt thing when choosing memory are the latencies 4 numbers like this,3-3-3-6,the lower the better, you should be able to afford a matched pair of corsair xms dual channel kit at timings of 2-2-2-5"the fastest possible"You can buy more expensive memory but you will only make use of ti if you overclock, the minimum amount you must have is 1gig :)

If you would like to trim some of the fat off we can easily get it down a bit, first the video card you dont need twin dvi outputs, the card with a vga and dvi output can be setup in a dual monitor config anyway

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&Category=0&minPrice=&maxPrice=&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

Thats $60 off,the case you chose looks pretty good but it comes with a 450w powersupply dont under any circumstances use that power supply for your new system to try and save money, the one place you cant skimp is the power supply,if you like that case, stick the psu that comes with it in a draw and charge one of your family $30 when theirs Goes :D --or find a case you like without a psu included you may save a few $$

You could also opt for the cheaper 3200 venice cpu-

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&Category=0&minPrice=&maxPrice=&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

this will also save you $80 and it will still have better gaming performance than the original p4 you had chosen.

Other than that its perfect,I wouldn't touch anything else :)
