AMD 64 3700+ or AMD Opteron 144??

Which is better? I'm building a cheap gaming system for my father on 939 technology (cheaper). Both of those CPUs have a 1MB cache, and the San Diego has higher clock speed. What's better?

if you're going to overclock it then go for the opteron, otherwise id get the athlon

I saw in ur sig that u cant get HDR to work in Oblivion; the x800 cards and below dont have shader model 3.0 which Oblivion needs to run HDR. CS:S is a SM 2.0 game which your card supports.

 

The 3700 is the better chip stock or OCed, it has higher stock speed and for Ocing it has higher multiplier
OCing wise, the Opty 144 is limited by a 9x multiplier


The Opteron's in general have better memory controller, the memory controller is built in the CPU
The opteron are said to have better Quality control during manufacturing

If you were comparing the 3700 to Opteron 146 I'd go for the 146

OCing wise Most all 3700's & 146 Opty's are capable of 3Ghz on Air
The 144 with some Great memory & good MOBO 3Ghz is possible

I have an 146 opty on a DFI NF4 Ultra D, a Sweet chip, a 3700 is like it's twin bro

If you plan on OCing, I'd suggest PC4000/DDR500 memory

The Difference in the 3700's at newegg is the one thats out of stock has variable voltage, important if OCing, if running stock no matter.
