AMD 64 or Intel P4?

I am building a gaming laptop (i know, oxy-moron), and I wanted an unbiased opinion from as many as are willing, to help me decide on the processor to purchase. I have no preference.

    The contenders: AMD's 64bit vs Intel's P4

I am open to ALL opinions, but I would appreciate some facts associated with the response threads; Not just "AMD SUX", and no explanation why.

    Thank you,
    Master Jedi Spud

if its for gaming, amd is the tops
ask any gamer, and usually they'll tell you to choose amd
the P4 cores are designed more for multimedia, amd's procs have always been the choice for gaming..

From what I've read, the AMD 64 is the way to go...it is a very kick-ass 32-bit processor! Here's a few links that'll give you hard numbers to go by, so I'm not just saying 'intel sucks':

http://www.emulators.com/secrets.htm - scroll down about a 1/10th of the way down the page, where it reads "The 64-bit question". Lots of good info here.

    AMD All the way!

    Get a AMD 64 on a nForce3 250 Motherboard, and a Nvidia Graphics card. ;)

    :D :D

You'll have a kick ass system!

You really don't want a P4 in a laptop anyway ... too hot. Pentium M maybe, but you'll like the AMD better for gaming.

Why do people keep calling them labtops? :( Someone needs to start campaigning for this common missconception that it belongs on top of a lab!

    Whoops missed the laptop part.

Well i have seen 64 bit notebooks. You probably wont be able to get too picky.

Dell, i think, has a gaming laptop w/ upgradeable graphics. I would look for that. Graphics cards are the first thing that needs to be replace in gaming computers, so that option of upgrade ability is a major attraction. You would have to go with a Pentium with the dell though, but the fastest mobile Pentium wouldn't hold you back at all.

I have indeed seen A64 laptops, go get one with a mobility 9800? I believe?, the one with the X800 core and the 8 pipes, awesome gaming card for a laptop. Or is there something newer out now?

Looking at wavetar's benchmarks would indicate that the mobile pentium is faster than the Athalon 64 3200 desktop processor. I believe Acer came out with the Ferrari with the 64 3000 mobile chip yet the benchmarks I've seen for that were slower than the desktop version.

as an intel fanboy I must concede the 939s are the way to go, for now ... however I'd trust the P4s thermal protection over AMDs any day of the week, which is a big concern on laptops
