    Hi guys, can you tell me if you know of any compatibility issues with AMD processors and Windows 8.1 or more specifically;
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3000 MHz AM2 Windsor and Windows 8.1

    Also, is there any truth to this article?
    http://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-confirms-some-older-amd-processors-do-not-support-windows-81

    I'm asking because I'm trying to install windows 8.1 on a machine with the above processor and it keeps freezing and crashing.

    I'm wondering if windows 8 will work or should I go down to windows 7?

    Apparently what the article says is true. Microsoft's own Surface runs Intel. Win 8 and 7 should still work with the AMD X2.

    Some older AMD CPUs do not require needed instructions for 8.1, but 8.0 doesn't require them if you want to downgrade. IF memory serves, 32 bit 8.1 does not have this problem.

    Seems silly in this day and age, but software is typically designed with Intel as a reference platform. Shame on AMD for this one.

    I think Adry is saying some AMD chips do not have the instruction set needed to run Windows 8 64 bit.
    I am still recommending Win 7 unless you have a compelling reason to use Windows 8. Windows 10 will be out before support for Windows 7 is dropped and by all accounts should be a marked improvement.

    Everything has it's day. The Bulldozer and Piledriver chips have Intel sets which support such versions of Windows, as do the Phenom and PhenomII series.

    If you're still running an Athlon X2 it's time to upgrade, or run Windows 7. Win7 is supported until January 14, 2020. If XP is any indicator, it may go beyond that.

    As DOA said, unless you really need Win8, it's not necessary. Vista is still supported until April of 2017.

    I was counting on that; to upgrade to Windows 10; however, I'm assuming that since support for these older cpus were dropped for Windows 8.1, it may also not be supported by Windows 10.

    Yeah, it's an old machine, not mine though.
    I will take your guys' advice and go Windows 7

    I certainly wasn't! And I think you remember right, I recall reading somewhere that this problem is only for the 64-bit version. However, what is the point of having a 64-bit processor, if you're not going to use it?!!
