Ok im gonna get a new heatsink/fan for my AMD Athlon XP 2600+... But the heatsink/fan that came in the box has a flat bottom with a little outdentation to contact the processor (my processor had 4 little pads in each corner so the heatsink didnt touch the whole processor only the little part where it came out....) So i was looking at a few from thermaltake.... but when i say the pictures the bottome of the heatsink/fan was just flat(no little metal sticking out like on my stock AMD HSF(heatsink/fan)) so that the HSF would only be resting on the four little squishy pads my current HSF sits on.... So i came here to ask if these are right or do i need a different kind?

Thermaltake VOLCANO 10+ (UPTO XP 3400+)

    or this

    CoolerMaster JET 7+

Or is there another i should be looking at..... Im trying to stick to a budget of around $20.00.... Im going to be using this for some moderate-heavy gameplay with games like DOOM 3(when it comes out) C&C Generals, C&C Renegade, Warcraft III, i usually play games 7-12 hours a day...

Here's what i got right now:
    Motherboard: ASUS A7N8X-X
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2600+("Barton Core" 333FSB)(Retail Box)
    512 MB PC3200 Corsair RAM
4 3500RPM Case Fans (including 2 on PSU)
    ASUS QuieTrack CD-ROM drive
    Maxtor 40GB Harddrive
    Dynex Floppy drive

Those little pads are there to make sure the HSF does not crush the core (the little bit that sticks out.) Im not sure what you mean about the metal, but the thermaltake hsf is a good choice, and will go on your processor. I have a TT Volcano 11+. It has really nice cooling, it can get loud, but it keeps my 2400+ very cool. I would reccomend that.

Make sure when you install the hsf you scrape off the crappy pad on the bottom and apply some thermal grease. Arctic Silver 3 or 5 is IMO the best to use. AS3 is easier to apply. You would probley see at least a 2degree decreese!

All AMD heatsinks have that little notch. Look at the socket you are using, it is raised on one side.

most likely the AMD stock heatsink you have is the one with the odd metal piece screwed to the bottom. It's not that efficient, so you won't see that on aftermarket heatsinks. What you get in an aftermarket heatsink is a milled "step" that clears the socket cam. Both of those heatsinks will work with your processor. The biggest concern you should have is whether or not those will clear te capacitors around the CPU socket, best to measure before you order.

So when i get a new HSF i shouldn't need to do anything about the little pads, Right?

Ive added another HSF.... the TT Volcano 12....

So i was wondering what is everyones opinion on what i should get for my XP 2600+?

    The volcano 12?

    The Jet 7?

    The Volcano 10?

Im open for suggestions : )

You wont have to do anything about the pads. :) There there to support the heatsink so it wont crush the processor.

The volcano 12 i a good cooler, but it is really heavy. I have read in several places that all that weight could put to much stress on the motherboard. IMO it should work fine. Really all the volcano coolers are great!

ok cool... So $24.99 for the Volcano 12 is a good deal right? Also... Should i get Arctic Silver( i hear you nearly have to destroy your HSF/processor to get it off) or the Thermal tape? (I might be getting a 3200+ in the near future.....) Also what is the Copper CPU Protection Shim is it worth paying $5.49 for it?

Only if you were using the AS Adhesive, which you won't be needin'. Use rubbing alcohol to remove the old grease for the processor before applying the new stuff.

Ok kool :D but i have one more question lol... I keep finding better and better fans.... lol here is one from Foxconn that im also thinking about...

Foxconn PKP134 Socket A CPU Cooler, for CPU Up to 3400+, w/ Powerful Heat Pipe, for Overclocking, Retail box

    http://www.directron.com/pkp134.html

for only 20 bucks it seems like a great deal... but im not all that up-to-speed on HSF's I also could not find how heavy this is.... If anyone can tell me how heavy it is or if they can tell me if its worth it? (i checked the space around my ASUS A7N8X-X mobo and i think i have enough space if anyone could double check the specs or if uve got this same mobo it would be appreciated :) ) i was just wondering if this HSF is a HIT or a MISS?

I have the thermaltake 10. it lowered my temp by 3-4 degrees from the stock, with some arcticsilver 5. its pretty quiet even with a fan controller and turning it up about 300 rpms. its awesome, for overclocking, and stock speeds. dont use the thermal pad on the hs though...

Dont go for the copper shim. They wont do anything for you. If you dont mind noise, i would seriously suggest the Volcano 11+. It is a great cooler, and on high my 2400 doesnt break 40C on a load. :) (and im even overclocking) The cooler is only noisy when its at full speed. I belive it is 5600Rpm, not to sure.

As renegade said, the volcano 10 is a nice cooler too! Ive read good reviews, and it seems to do very well in my cousins box. :)

I think im gonna get the foxconn(allows more heat dissipation) heres the link:

Seems like a good deal to me... although i couldnt find the weight.....

Also im probably gonna use thermal tape (like on the stock AMD HSF)

Yeah. thermal tape, and pads pretty much suck. even if its cheap stuff, get some paste. (its all cheap, so go for the Arctic Silver)

Alright.... Just to make sure does anyone know for sure they are 100% sure that this HSF will fit on my ASUS A7N8X-X mobo? I just wanna make sure : )

    Thanks!
