An Interesting (GOOD!) "Development"

I have no clue (at the moment) why this has occurred - but it's a GOOD thing!

Upon a recent switch from an XP (Home) Firewall to Online Armor 3 (and still working-out a bug with that), I have now received the "Local Area Connection/A network cable is unplugged" Icon in the lower-right taskbar (the icon of a computer or monitor [?] with a RED X across it).

Though now, quite mysteriously (to me anyway ... though it is Halloween!?!) - the speed of this PC is very noticeably IN-creased!

I am currently having a bit of a nerve (spine & pain) issue (having to type with one hand), and do not have the wherewith-all to figure it out (again, at the moment), but what I would very much like to do is to LEAVE this icon ON the taskbar (imagine that!), if that is what it takes to keep this speed.

I have had this icon pop-up (appear) in the past, and I always went-in, and did whatever it was to clear it - but perhaps there is a setting (box-ticked/unticked?) that I should be aware of that has otherwise been hindering my speed (?).

    Thanks in advance,
    g ...

means exactly what it says.....the speed increase is probably because you're not connected. How can you fairly measure a speed increase by simply having the presence of this icon in your notification area? I'm a little confused...

  3. could be pc tower or moniter my friend done all usual checks??

aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh yeah - that's what I thought - however, I am evidently connected as I am reading/writing these posts from you good folks (and surfin' the net otherwise), and got this icon staring me dead-square in me pupils! (?!?).

As well, and again, the "speed increase" is simply "very noticeable" - I'm zippin' around my PC (and the web) as quick as ever ... wait a minute - maybe it's this strong coffee I so well enjoy ..., :confused, ... nope, that usually causes just the opposite - for me to notice the s-l-o-w-ness of things ...

Am a bit perplexed myself here (though that's certainly nothin' outta da ordinary ...)

    * On Edit - Could well be that I am not following the full scope understanding of "Network". This PC is not on a local network (per se) - it's the only one in the house. I am/was assuming it (the icon) was referring to my ISP connection (?).

Thanks but ... I'm not certain what "all" the "usual checks" would be (even under the best of circumstances) ...

  6. you can just poke n prod gently @ cables and sometimes it is that simple.!
;) had someone mess with cables or change rather and it worked....

Thanks again m-r - but what I am saying is: this PC is moving at "lightning speed" (for the ISP plan that it is connected with) - I mean as fast as "EVER", and faster than it has been in quite some time (maybe a year!).

I wish (want) to keep things just as they are (right at this very moment), and am afraid (which is usually problematic, in and of itself), am afraid I'll do something smart - for a change, such as "lose" this icon, and then lose this speed as well. HELP!!! Things are working VERY WELL for me!!! :-D

I'll search around for a speed-test program, and see if I can measure it that way. This DSL connection (the lowest offered by this particular ISP) is sold as "Up to 192 kbps (download)". I usually only get about 150 - or somewhere in that neighborhood. Lets see what I can test at now ....

grc...that is just a network icon. It indicates a local network of connected computers. It is always in your tray, but sometimes it's hidden if not used.

    Are you on wireless?

Are you generally set up on a network?

That icon would not, in itself speed up your computer. If you had been connected to a network, along with other computers, and they are no longer connected, that could give you better speed.

Thank you. But no ma'am, I'm not on wireless, and not generally (not at all) set-up on a network (that is, never had any other computers "physically" connected here - though perhaps I had a setting that was in error - that has now somehow been straightened-out?).

The (very) strange thing is, since this icon appeared, my PC is faster, and I just used a speed-test program ("speedtest.net" - from my ISP) that backs-up the assertion. I "think" (?) the result will show here:

    http://www.speedtest.net/result/348218107.png

I usually test "around 150 kbps" (give or take 10-20) download, and "around 35" Upload. My average of five tests was 199.2 (download), and 48.8 Upload.

Can't figure-out why things would be faster with or since this icon suddenly appeared? Could it be that this new Firewall has blocked some errant setting that I may have had "ticked" all along?

I completely missed the fact that you had a new firewall.

That is probably the reason for your speed increase. Chances are the new one is using up less resources.

That icon is always there though. It's sitting in mine right now. ;)

Ok great news (for me on the 'new FW/less-resources'-used thing), however, this FW was installed almost a week ago, and again, the increase in speed came just today, AFTER the icon showed-up (mysteriously appeared).

The icon may well have "always been there" - but it was most certainly "hidden" if it was "there", because I am a bit fanatical (ever-vigilant/observant) about "trying" to keep that area (and unnecessary start-up programs) - cleared.

Do you have more than one ethernet port in your computer?
One of our computers has two ethernet ports so I'm used to seeing that icon.
Open device manager and what is listed under network adapters?

Thanks plodr (and by the way, always wondered - is it "plo-der", or plod-er"??)

Only one listing under Network adapters (my Realtek NIC), but interestingly, next on the list, under "Other Devices" (with a yellow question mark)>"PCI Simple Communications Controller", and then again with the yellow question mark next to that, but also a yellow Exclamation Point over top of the question mark ... I've wondered about this for some time, tried to figure it out, and believe I even asked here once, but don't recall getting a reply on it ...

    Short for plodder
verb : To work or act perseveringly or monotonously; drudge.
Since I'm very persistent or stubborn, depending on your view, this describes me.

To find out what the PCI Communications Controller stands for, you'd need to run unknown device identifier then search for the proper drivers.

I've used the first software and it helped me a lot. I have never ued the second one.
