I am the owner and administrator of my home network. I need to find 2 different IP addresses connected to the network through my router. So I d/l a copy of Angry IP Scanner. After I try to run it I get an error msg that reads,

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

What gives? I am the admin of my system. How could it be possible that I do not have the proper permission?

Also I tried to move the ipscan.exe file and got the same error. I was unable to unzip a second copy of the file till I deleted the first. Can anyone explain this or point me at an explanation?

Can anybody tell me if I should create another administrator account an try to run the program. Would this have any sort of effect? What secruity programs interfere with IP Scanners?

I have no clue as to ip scanner ....is there a problem with just doing an ip config on the two or three computers? If they are networked and show in my network places ...each ip address should show when you click on each puter. Or am I misunderstanding the question/ problem?

OK I'll outline what I have here. My Dell XPS is my main system from where I'll administer my network. My second box is actually a TiVo box and I have run an application to Open the USB ports and to enable, I believe, the telnet. The problem is I do not know what the IP address that was assigned to the TiVo box is.

I am following this instruction: "you'll need to determine the IP address of your TiVo, assuming you have it set to use DHCP. Use a utility such as Angry IP Scanner to do so. Your TiVo will have an IP address beginning with 192.168.0. "

    From this site: http://www.dvrplayground.com/article/12771/

So it would seem simple enough to run the "Angry IP Scanner" and just have it give me a report on what systems are attached to my router. (My third computer is a Mac that at this point just shares the Internet connection just fine.)

As near as I can tell something is blocking my access to the program and I cannot tell what. I am also having intermittent trouble running my Filezilla Server. I seem to have to reinstall it in order to get it to run.

So, I feel very lost and am not sure what to check next, none of the FAQ's for either program cover what I have been running into.

I run my firewall through an AOL service, (long story as to why, but it seems to work just fine)

Does any of this info help to make it clearer what I should check out next? Thanks for taking the time to think on this.

You got this info from this? 00-13-10-2e-58-3e
I think 100 is my Dell. I enabled the FTP protocol on My Mac and it claims the FTP address is 192.168.1.102 so maybe the Mac is lying to me, wouldn't be the first time, hehe. Does that make sense or could it have changed from the last time I ran arp?

I re-ran arp and got this, does it help?

Thanks for the link. I have spent the greater part of the last 8 hours researching. It seems the application I used to open my USB ports on the TiVo actually does not support the brand of adapter I have been using. It needs a Netgear FA120 and I can't get it locally and had chosen to try a Airlink ASOHOUSB model.

That does not really explain my initial trouble with the Angry IP scanner, nor the trouble I have with setting up a FTP server without having to reinstall the software everytime I want to open it up. So thanks for trying. I was able to take the info that you gave me and use it to diagnose at least part of my troubles.

Thanks again, and I'll post again on the morrow when I learn more.

So once I got the right USB 2.0 net adapter I was able to log into the TiVo on the network via FTP and then to move on to the next phase of my project. It is still unclear why the very first program "Angry IP Scanner" failed to operate. Thanx for weighing in on this.

Have you tried using a ping swwp utility? We use the one by Solar winds at work, and it works awesome. I haven't looked, but I'm sure you can find one here on MJ. Just install it on your XPS, specify the range, and let it go out and ping ur network. You will get a list with all the IPs used.
