I have a disc/stick for Windows 10 .WIM prior to anniversary update. Where can I find such a link for after anniversary that is .WIM?

That's a clear video, Thank you.
I did not see where it is .WIM and I believe the tool is .ESD.
It sure is a handy reference.

If in the Sources folder it's listed as Install ESD, there's a tool called ESD2WIM-WIM2ESD.wimlib (attached) that will allow you to convert between the two. Read the ReadMe file on how to do so.

Yes I see the converter. I also have one in bookmarks if and when. .WIM allows for extended DISM options as I am sure you are aware of.
The .WIM is not compressed as is .ESD which accounts for my large Macrium image.
    Thanks

Actually, if you use something like 7-zip to open a WIM or ESD you'll find that WIM is approximately a 5:1 compression and an ESD is approximately a 26:1 compression.

Thanks for that. Quite a difference in size.
    Which do you use?

If I'm simply going to install Windows, either. But, I've used NTLite to integrate updates into the installation media and for that, it needs to be Install.WIM. I've used the wimlib I attached to Post #4 for conversion. I've never used DISM like you have.

I actually could use .ESD at my somewhat low level and benefit from the compression.
I have used a DISM command that is unusual but rarely

Why would install.wim be included in your system image? It's located in your installation media, not in Windows after install.

Thank you I did not know that

My mistake. I read the word Macrium but didn't associate a HDD/SSD image because I saw the file extension "WIM" and thought you were talking about installation media.

I don't think there's any way to take a Windows installation from a HDD/SSD and create a WIM or ESD. Your best bet is to choose high compression for the output in your imaging software. I use AOMEI Backupper for imaging. With high compression selected, my image size is less than 50% of the total amount that's imaged.

You are right; just a bit of confusion.
You reminded me to increase the compression with Macrium.

The best way to reduce the size of your Macrium image peter, if you haven't already done so, is to move all your personal stuff off of the system partition so it doesn't get imaged every time (or overwritten when restoring). If you don't have a second permanently attached drive you could use for this you would need to partition your system drive first but that's not difficult.

You are right Bernie I have seen videos about partitioning and I should do it.
My one drive with a reserve partition really does not take too long and it has never failed.

Yes, it does depend on how much personal stuff you have. If you can create an image in 15 mins or so then it isn't worth doing. But if it takes an hour or more then definitely.

Yes, 15 to image and the same to verify. All personal is on two flash drives. I have Google Take Out, Drive etc as I am transitioning to a Chromebook for my wife and the notes are essential. I have a lot of windows notes in docs. It is working for me.
