Annoy a Spammer

This is funny.

Lycos has made a screensaver that repeatedly requests information from Web sites that deal in spam, thereby reducing the performance of those sites.

They also have a little flash animation where you can click on a spammers name and do the same thing as what the screensaver does.

Payback is fun.

 

Forgot to say you need to pick a country........so if you want it in English, pick the UK or International English.

 

seems like a good idea... tho, I tend to just turn my moniter off if I am going to be away from ma comp any length of time...

I really feel sorry for the spammers, don't you.

Hey the spammers advertised the link, they got what's coming.

Maybe Lycos can put in an unsubscibe link specifically for the spammers to use to be removed from the blacklist. Of course the link won't work and will add them to other lists, install spyware when clicked....etc..

The screensaver is disabled for now. It says, "Stay Tuned" when it pulls up.

I am afraid it worked too good by shutting down a few of the sites it targeted. They are probably afraid of lawsuits. I think it would have been legal if all it did was cause a severe slowdown.

Maybe someone else will come out with one that's located in a country without laws that protect spammers.

This was a brilliant idea, I don't know why someone didn't think of it before. I hope they figure a way around this and enable it again.

 

I just downloaded and installed and noticed that too. It was a great idea, I hope they don't shut it down for good.

 

Lets face it, its a DDoS no matter how you look at it. Even when they "tone it down" its hard to say it isnt a DDoS, since it works exactly like one.

Pushing sites offline is no way to solve spam anyway.

 

But so far this is the only way to get these spam sites offline. Perhaps Lycos can have a list of the sites they attack, and they can have their name removed from the list if they dont like it.

I think that this could be toned down a bit by maybe making this available to only those who are in an area that permits this or has laws against spam.

hehe. They came up with the idea, but, don't worry, if Lycos doesn't follow through, there will be copy cats of this for sure.

You could even sell something like this. All it takes is for somebody to maintain the database. I suppose you could even keep one yourself.

Read the previous posts, they are not supporting this anymore. When the screensaver runs, it doesn't do anything. so its pointless.

 

Very sad to see it's gone already.

I would PAY to use a product like this.
