    Hello folks !!!
Well,,, heres my problem !!! For the past few days, there has been an annoying sound coming out from the hard disk. Im not 100% sure if its from the HD though, but it does appear its coming from it.

This is what has happened !!! For 5 or 6 months back, i replaced my CD Writer with a DVD Writer, im using the XC Cube by the way.......u know...those tiny looking computer. Yeah so , i didnt take any help from the experts, but did the replacement myself. Didnt have any problems though,, things seem to work fine.,, until these few days.

The noise is not loud though,, but it seems to annoy me. And i just wanna get rid of it.
Anyone knows what im talking about ??? Kindly help me out.:)

Computers, in general, are quiet beasts, so a hard drive sound *could* be a sign that the hard drive is going. I would back up my data just in case. Since the hard drive has moving parts, it tends to be one of the most common failures in computers. If the sound is a clicking noise, it probably is the HD.

Uh Oh !!! I dont like what im hearing !!!
Its not a "click" sound, its like a "motor running" sound...and its very faint, u have to lean ur ears close to the machine, then u can hear the sound.

I dont know how crutial the thing is,, but its quite a new computer. Must be around a year and a half.

But if its real bad,, then i think i.ll have to start praying now.

Year and a half is a bit young for a hard drive to fail, i think. I suggest opening it back up and checking all the screws that secure your HDD make sure none are loose, and see if anything is resting on top of the Drive like a power cable or IDE cable, might just be something sitting on it and shaking. I left a screw sitting on top of a drive once. hehe

Would take a straw and placing one end in the ear of choice ....probe various areas for the sound ...could just be a fan humming ...:) :)

I had a similar issue with a HD awhile back. Some time (don't remember exactly) later, I ended up losing my HD completely. Disk errors, failure to boot properly etc. Doesn't sound like it's an immediate problem, as your HD isn't too loud. If the noise increases, I'd look into replacing before you lose all data. Btw, what's the brand? I've had bad experiences with Maxtor. I hear W.Digital isn't bad, but I personally stick with Seagate. I have an 8gb Seagate I bought over 6 years ago that I have in a second box. I use it for surfing leet strats while playing on my main box, having a bazaar trader in EQ 24/7 or playing a 2nd character in groups. Only downside to the 8gb's is with having EverQuest loaded on it, there's not enough room to load XP so I have to use my old copy of Windows ME.

Praying is sometimes good. But if it were mine, I'd run a surface check. If bad sectors start coming up, get the data off and replace the drive.

The only reason I'd be concerned about a "motor running" sound is if it suddenly appeared - and even that could be caused by a case panel that had started to vibrate in sympathy with the drive. But like TimW says, you could be hearing a fan whose bearings are starting to wear a little. Fan bearings are nowhere near as rugged as a hard drive's bearings.

A grinding noise or a whine might be another matter -- especially if it's coming from the drive, and not a fan.

    Kool !! Thanx people !!!!
I.ll check and see if theres any wire touching the HDD. As i mentioned earlier, i changed my dvd burnner recently, and must have not tightned up the screw or something.
Hopefully , its cos of this. Otherwise im in deep trouble
