my mcafee av program just found a virus called W32/Polybot in my system32 folder. mcafee.com doesnt specify this, but i think this is causing my annoying little problem. when i log on(win xp), i get about 20 "beeps" sounding like when a d/l is complete. after, it happens about once a minute. now, my comp randomly restarts itself. is this program a backdoor? thanks

also, what program could i use to get rid of this virus?

Okay go to my computer--right click properties--advanced--start up and recovery settings--uncheck the box automatically restart-and check the box write event to the system log--apply and ok
This should stop windows rebooting and present you with a blue screen of death with the relevant information as to what caused the problem

Unless this is a overheating problem, those beeps may well be the CPU hitting its critical temperature and shutting down, have you checked to see what temps you are running

There are multiple types of W32/Polybot and they are listed on McAfee's site. See this link:

also, they aren't beeps from the cpu, they are the exact sounds a download makes when it is complete. i believe windows xp calls it "exclaimation".

The link I gave you below tells you how to remove it. You did say you were using McAfee. See the removal instructions in the link. Make sure you have the expected data definitions file or newer too as specified. It requires at least 4339 or higher.
