almost no skill involved.. and it does slow down your surfing speed because it depends on how fast the proxy is.

.....do you need a proxy is the #1 question you need to be asking yourself.

    Well lets see....
Do you know how much of YOUR personal information is PUBLICALLY ACCESSIBLE to advertisers, hackers and online snoops? The Anonymizer Privacy Test will show you.

Lets take the privacy test anonymizer offers to see what they can see.

A person does not have to be doing anything illegal to benefit from a proxy server. I have found anonymizer to be very good service . I use it when I am surfing the web for anything that sounds interesting. I have in the past ventured into websites that were not safe Why you asked??? Well, because of bad links pop ups deceptions and just plain stupidity. You think you are logging to a good website next thing you know you are having hell trying to close all the browser windows that website opened. Yes some of us like to browse in other countries and languages. I do not limit my searches to sites in the Unites States. SO because of this I want to protect myself from websites that might try to ruin my day.

As you can see I am not using a proxy server right now since I know Major Geeks is not out to get me in any way. This site has only given me good advice.

CAN YOU SAY THAT ABOUT ALL THE SITES YOU HAVE VISITED??????

A proxy server is a good idea if you are just browsing into the unknown. (Internet)

    OHHH one more thing

Privacy is your right. therefore it is also your right to protect it.
IF a website is trying to get info off my computer for whatever reason. then I have the right to prevent them from doing so.
I want to browse the internet I do not want the internet to browse me

    Now to finalize this

If you have broadband then yes the proxy server will slow you down a bit.
on a 56k I have even noticed a slight increase in speed since I am not downloading the pages off the website but off the proxy server. and believe me A proxy server is a whole lot faster than any computer you might have at home.
If the traffic is heavy on the proxy server then yes it will slow you down. A small price to pay for protection.

    endiablado,

That site shows absolutely _nothing_ about my system.

Maybe you should try tightening your IE settings up a bit.........but I do use The Proxomitron, so maybe that helps.

    Regards,
    Jade.

BTW, no matter what you try to do to stay anonymous, there is always a way to find out about your connection/system etc. Proxies just make it harder. Simply put, there is not much to do regarding staying anonymous anymore. Without doing illegal things.

Jabman.. I thought I was the only one who used the proxomitron ;)

don't install that program if you don't need to..

if you want a proxy, use a website, you don't have to install anything:

    http://www.nonymouse.com (this is the best)

    http://www.guardster.com (second best)

    http://www.megaproxy.com

I think you are right. that might just be helping you a bit;)

Good Point. I will visit those sites and check them out;)

Excellent that is about the only thing it should find ;)

Now you guys know that your level of expertise when it comes to computers is pretty darn good. We are talking about the regular joe who knows enough to log on the computer and check his email. I mention this cause I have the opportunity once in a while to donate computers to charities. The computers I have fixed and made good again have been full of incredible personal information that is accessible to whoever might want it. I saw internet temp files that gave me a pretty good descripion of what that person was like and what he/she liked to do. All the cookies indicated a certain pattern so I was able to know them just by looking at all the cookies they left on those boxes. Believe it or not those computer had about 300mb of worthless cookies and temp files enough to tell anyone what these people do.
I never tested the security settings on those computers but I am almost positive there were none. This is the kind of individual I am talking about. And guess what theyre are plenty of them out there (fi not the majority at least 50% of them)

I am sincerely glad to hear that your computers are safe. Mine is too. that test was not able to see anything but my IP. But
I am sure that there will be some folks out there who will see more than just their ips. those I concern my self with.

Here is another test. How safe is your Browser

I doubt that test is even close to accurate, 0 vulns in an IE 6 SP1 is illogical, MS has not patched more then 2 year old vulnerabilities (oh the demise of Thor's unpatched IE vulns page), and Lie Di Yiu (sp?) recently showed a 6 step attack on IE that allowed CODE EXECUTION, using a variety of unpatched vulns that MS refuses to patch. Plus, IE 6 has a ton of yet to be discovered holes, and considering I see probably a code execution vuln in IE per week I doubt that test is accurate. Just check your wmplayer.exe ;) *cough*

I see so many IE holes I begin to think that code execution is not even important...

    I couldn't agree more Vlad902 :) .

But with some third party apps - System Safety Monitor/Abtrusion Protector/Process Guard - our security can certainly be strenghthened against these types of code execution vulnerabilities.

    Layered security anyone?

Of course, it all depends on how far _each_ person is willing to go in securing their computer. Personally, I like to try and keep my system as secure as possible ;) .

    Many regards,
    Jade.
