    ok heres what i want to do it may sound complicated but thats me anyways

    i want to write a batch file that will copy my whole flash drive into a back up folder located at %user profile%\My Documents\flash drive back up

    and i want an option to run said batch when i plug my flash drive in (have it be an option in the auto run menu that normaly pops up)

    Hi red death68,
    to copy your flash is the same like this.

    If you want to use the auto run you have to write a file named "autorun.inf" into the root of your flash drive.

    Code:
    [autorun]
    shellexecute=autoBatch.bat
    action=autoBatch
    useautoplay=1
    It will run the "autoBatch.bat" (just for example). But note that the auto run of flash drives is disabled verry often. On Vista and Win 7 it would NEVER work (no possibility!).

    Probably not what you want to hear, but... My recommendation would be to just go through the trouble of running the batch file manually when you need to back it up. Personally, I have had AutoRun and AutoPlay disabled on all of my Windows computers ever since the Conficker outbreak in late 2008 and early 2009. In my mind, AutoRun is just an avenue for infection--especially if you're moving your flash drive from computer to computer. ...Take it for what it's worth--that's just my two cents.

    sorry for double post but its working fine once i renamed the batch file i wanted to run (it had space in it) but now when i double click my flash drive it starts the auto run is there a way to make it just open by double clicking the drive in my computer instead of running the auto run?

    I've read that it was possible with XP and Vista, but not recommended as PEBKAC said. I use my 16 Gb stick as my toolbox when I go and fix peoples PCs/Laptops, and I wouldn't want to compromise it.

    The Conficker virus seems to prove it is possible. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2009/11/what_windows_autorun_hath_wrou.html

    but if you have this fix installed http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971029

    Hmm... AutoRun is disabled on my computer, but as far as I remember holding the shift key bypasses the the execution of the .inf file. Give it a try.
