Another blue screen scenario...related to CPU usage?

Hi! So far, I've gotten this blue screen 3 times. Each time happened right when I turn the computer on. I have a HP Pavilion dv4000. The blue screen contains this information:

    STOP: 0X0000007E (0XC0000005, 0X00000000, 0XF79E2FDC, 0XF79E2CD8)

What is this and what does it mean?

Also, recently I've been having some unexplained CPU usages. Windows Idle Process has 98%, yet the bottom of the task bar has ~30% usage. The entire computer lags like crazy, and the mouse jumps when you move it. What could this be? I suspect it's memory related. Anyone know where I can get a memory tester? (Although it hasn't happened for several days)

    Thanks a bunch

    most probable is RAM.
download n run memtest for a few hours, or if you have 2 sticks of ram pull one out and see if the problems still occur, if they do, pull that one out n try the other one.

I ran a mem test for many hours..it doesn't seem to have found anything. But then again I don't know how to read those messages either. I used memtest 1.7. I didn't take apart my laptop because I don't want to mess with it lol.

What else could it be? Or maybe it is the RAM afterall, but it likes to act like an immature kid and spin awkwardly once in a while? I'm confused about this stuff. Any input would be most heartfeltly welcomed.

alright, the next two probable culprits are the HDD giving up, or a software problem.
To find out if its the hdd, there are 3 things you can do-
    1) check the system event logs. theres a possibility that they show if the hdd has bad blocks or the system cant read from the hdd (something like \\DEVICE0.....)

    2) run a chkdsk /r (at the end it tells you if you have bad blocks or not)

    3) and the best way.... download a HDD diagnostic tool from the HDDs manifacturer (eg seatools from seagate etc etc) & run that.

    Hey, thanks for the help.

    1) I don't know how to do that confused

    2) I ran that, but the log or whatever disappeared so fast that I couldn't see it. But my glimpse tells me that the 2nd column were all 0s.

    3) My Toshiba harddrive apparently doesn't have a factory HDD diagnostic tool. :(

The weird thing is the lag has stopped, and hasn't happened for nearly a week. If it's not the harddrive, could it be iTunes? The lag seemed to have coincided with my playing iTunes for 15 hours a day for half a week (iTunes now uninstalled, but the lag stopped a few days after the uninstallation). The lag is lagged itself. If that makes sense rolleyes

    alright, firstly the events....
right click on my computer -> click on manage -> under 'system tools' there is 'event viewer'
if you open event viewer and go down to 'system', in there are all the events, good & bad that have occured to your system in order of date.
now if you remember the approx date/time of the problem last occuring, scroll to there and look for any events with the red circles with white x's through them ('error").

you can ignore any ones where the source is 'service control manager' but any other ones might point towards whats going on with your computer, and weather its a software/hardware issue.

if you find any weird ones post em here and ill get back to you ;)

This "atapi" one seems very popular among the error messages. I copy/pasted those that are recurring and between a week and 2 weeks ago.

OK, this is either one of two things... most likely being hard drive failure. i would stop using your pc until you have made a backup of your info. the 2nd thing it could be is the ide port on your motherboard (a lot less likely)
i would recommend getting a new HDD & ghosting your old one accross onto it (you wont lose any settings, info etc etc if you do a ghost) i find the best probram is symantic ghostpe.

Ah..even though it's fine now, it'll fail some time soon?

Damn Toshiba HDD...the Toshiba HDD that came with this laptop failed like 3 months after I bought it. Now it's gonna happen again =|

sorry to be the bearer of bad new mate.

if it isnt the HDD however it will be the IDE controller (which on a laptop means its time to get a new laptop) however i highly doubt it is the controller as the hdd is by far the most common offender.

theres no way the laptop is under warranty?

    good luck champ
