hate to appear repetitive, but my comp. died two nights ago. it has worked great for almost a year since i built it. had just finished burning a dvd and was cruising the net when it just shut down. will not boot up now. sata hdd seems to spool up but never posts. screen stays blank. asus a7n8xe board, amd athlon cpu, 512mb memory, 350w supply with sata power connector. unplugged cd, dvd, floppy, still no boot. acquired another pwr. supply from old comp. at work, 145w. plugged in mobo and molex to hdd. nada. changed sata connector to mobo. zippo. was reading about numbnuts comp. in other post, my cpu fan is operational and rock steady. beginning to lean toward board or cpu myself. any thoughts? thanks.

Swap out the memory? bad memory causes the board to go black.

Any noise (beeps) from the MOBO? your cd or dvd rom light come on?

What are the temps like in the house and has the cpu been stable not overheating lately?

no beeps from mobo. cd and dvd lights do come on. don't have another mem stick so haven't tried it yet. removed fan from cpu but saw no discoloration on cpu. environment in house is normal.

Have you tried boot without the HD connected all you need connected at the moment mobo, cpu, mem, gfx card and psu. :)No pci cards or cdroms.

i have removed mobo battery to default bios, then put a startup disc in A: drive. doesn't even try A: drive. disconnected all other drives. memory is ultra, don't know if that is good brand or not. have done some searches on this problem, usually comes back with ram or cpu fault. might have to go the expensive shotgun route and start replacing stuff.

I'm woundering about the power supply?
You said you tryed an old 145w from work, that may not have enough juice.

I suggest you try another PSU, think bigger!

145W should be enough for CPU (68 watts), memory (~10 watts) per dimm and graphics card (~35 watts) nvidia ti series

removed mem stick, all drives, wireless nic card, agp. powered only mobo w/cpu. turned computer on. get no error beeps at all. would think i would get something. beginning to think the athlon 2800+ has become a 2800-.

No beeps after all memory and everything pulled? sounds like its the MOBO.

You know you can get a MOBO for like 60 bucks now on newegg.com.

The board was only a year old? that has me a little worried because I just built a system and that would suck if it didnt last. My old MOBO p4 Intel, still sound after 5 years.

I think its the MOBO if it doesnt beep with no memory stick.

I dont see how static electricity could affect anything since its in the case. No power surges in the house etc..?

145 total watts, a power supply divides the power up into different volts & different amperatures, might not have enough in areas where it need's ta bee!

Two things come to mind where a PC is not providing the beep codes or powering up.
    Failed PSU or insufficiant PSU
Shorted or grounded mobo ( can be loose screw just setting in the wrong place)

    Here's a silly question?
Do you have onboard speaker connected to hear beep codes?

yes, have a speaker. have always been able to hear posts. i appreciate all of the input. i'll scan the mobo and check for any loose screws or shorts. i've pretty much checked the thing over already numerous times but never hurts i guess. even removed the cpu, blew out socket, and re-inserted and tried. no luck. as i said, has been operating perfectly in a secure and clean environment. just went with no warning.

It could really be many things but I would have to agree with ASUS that the power supply is a prime candidate.

If you have other hardware you can test things on and swap then that would be a big help.
