My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv9308nr with VISTA 16bit and I currently have no sound.

I was downloading music from Limewire and went to "Browse Host" when the problem began. I am not exactly sure what happened after that. My virus scan was not active, stupid me, and when I reactivated it, AVAST Home, I received the following messages.

    1. WARNING: Sign of "WMA:Wimad[Drp]" has been found in "C:\Documents & Settings\User|Documents|Limewire|Incomplete|Preview-T-3545425-moriah carey.mp3" file

    3. WARNING: Sign of "WIN32:Trojan-gen{other}" has been found in "C:\Program Files\Helper\prolooker.dll"file

    4. WARNING: Sign of "WIN32:Adware-gen[Adw]" has been fund in "C:\Program Files\Morpheus\morpheustoolbar.exe" file

    5. WARNING: Sign of "WMA:Wimad[Drp]" has been fund in C:\Documents & Settings\User\Documents\Limewire\Incomplete\Preview-T-3545425-moria carey.mp3" file

When my computer first boots up, it tells me I have new hardware and need to look for the drivers. At this time, I do not have the disks which came with my system, as I am waiting for them from the original owner. I went on line to find the correct drivers and Windows directed me to NVIDIA.com, who, in turn, directed me to MicroSoft for a modified driver. Downloading it has not helped.

In my Device Manager, under Modems, "In-Build Conexant Type 2 modem" there is an yellow exclamation mark and when I click on it, the Device status says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39).

In my Device Manager, under Other Devices, "Coprocessor" there is a yellow exclamation mark and when I click on it, the Device status says "This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1) There is no driver selected for the device information set or element. To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.:

In my Device Manager, under Sound, video and games controllers, "High Definition audio Device" there is a yellow exclamation mark and when I click on it, the Device status says "Windows cannot load the device for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code39).

I have attempted updating, deleting and reinstalling with no success. I was told my only solution was to backup my hard drive and reformate it. If I must, than I will, but would prefer not to.

Is there something else I may be able to do? Thank you for your help.

Some antivirus apps will see components of some P2P apps as malware. Limewire and Morpheus are common sources of malware, and the way they function is sometimes seen as virus-like activity. However, muskie is right: follow that link to the malware removal guide, and follow the steps exaclty as they are spelled out....
