    hello, and thnx in advance.

i have a common problem with a bit of a twist.

so here goes, one laptop xp home sp2 one tower xp pro sp2, both have interent connection via wirless cards

heres the twist, the laptop can see itself and the tower, but when i click on the tower it gets the error msg of

"You might not be able to use this network resource. Contact the administrator for this server and find out if u have access permission

the network path was not found"

also it cant ping the other computer

now for the tower it cant get access to the workgroup, but it can ping the laptop...

    whats the deal here...?

o and i thought i might mention that the laptop is under norton 2005, and the tower is under norton 2004, sp2 fire walls disabled.

Try Enabling Guest Accounts in both the comp,

Also disable any kind of Passwords if u have for the admin accounts in both the computer

Chk in the BIOS of each Comp and see if the Network Card is configured to wake up on lan if yes disable it,

May be the last but not the least you can try restting your wireless router

    Which Router you have ???

ill take a look at the bios later tonight when no one is on my server and i dont have to worry about people losing connection then yelling at me :p

Don't even worry about BIOS settings, guest account settings, or router brand.... They got nothing to do with your problem. This is completely windows security issue.
When you have Pro and Home edition of XP, and have workgroup settings, you have to make sure you have correct security settings. oh, and you can ping any computer in the world if they are connected to ISP or your network. it doesn't mean you have access to their computer. for example, you can ping www.google.com but you will never have access to their file server...
First, make sure you have both computers join the same workgroup.
Second, make sure your user settings (ID and Password) on both computers the same. Or you can create one that matches exactly the same on both computers.
Third, when you create a shared folder, check the permission settings and security settings so that you give full permission to the users.
Fourth, make sure you login as User with full permission.

If these things don't work, email me. there are more steps you can try but most likely, this will work for you.

When it comes to Win XP the Guest Accounts do Matter a Lot

You will find the Guest Accounts in the Control Panel > Usser Accounts

Also Try changing the chanel of your router from 6 to 11

you will find that in the router page

    Try the Power Cycle once

the power cycle im not too worried about. last time i chnaged the channel from 6 to 11 or 1 all my computeres kept getting droped internets connections and the router continually needed rebooting.

ill check the gues accs in a few mins

did u restart both comps ?

    If yes

Try to chage the Work Gourp

Right click on My computer, Go to properties, Network Identification Tab, Click change

Give a New Name to your work group

It should be same in both comps, and then ensure comp names are diff,

    disable any external fire walls
