Another linux noob....installing Suse 9.2 issues...

Gday there,

I have a drama trying to install Suse 9.2 on my Targa Visionary XP laptop. All goes well with the installation, and starting up is no drama until...the dreaded winmodem, I have a Smartlink 56K..of which I have now obtained the linux drivers....the other issue I have is now with getting it to use my dvd drive....it doesnt want to read dvd's, it is reading it as a cd...therefore have the drama of not being able to get into my dvd copy of suse 9.2....therefore am unable to install the modem properley, (I used the included copy of slammr...to no avail) as I need to get the source code to do this properly. My friendly and helpful IT section at work has several Linux guru's who are rather keen for me NOT to return to the "darkside" but I have to sort out the drama with the dvd issue. When I have searched Google for a result...they are all in German...which is fine if you speak German.....I was wondering if anyone else has a solution and could sort of point me in the right direction. I have not had pleasant experiences with SuSE myself.

I bet that if you were to try, oh, Knoppix, or Mepis, you would have an easier time of it.

Yep. You may find your modem detected "automagically" in MEPIS.

Thanks guys! The link provided was most insightful...and as for trying other distro's I might give that a go as well and see what I like the best.
