I run XP Pro, with the auto updates from Microsoft switched on.
This morning, it wanted to install SP3.
Took awhile, seems to have went well.
One quirk. Now if I click on a file link, it doesn't ask if I want to "open or save". Media player 9 just starts and plays. Is there a switch that got reset?
I've looked everywhere I can think of. I liked having the choice. Felt like an extra layer of protection.

    Thanks

I would suggest you update your media player - version 10, or, 11 is available- sp3 is the most recent of Microsoft multiple fixes, it seems that many programs now seem to need the later .net versions. Have you got microsoft .net framework version 3 ?
Have you a good reason not to want to update media player.

Don't know about the framework version.
    I installed Media player 10.
    So far so good.
Are there any issues with MP 11 ?
I get a little gun shy about changing things.
    Thanks

I can fully understand your reluctance to update too far-- if version 10 works, then stick, for now.
If you go to add and remove programs, you can see what version of microsoft.net framework you have in the list.

Went on vacation, got back and it's doing it again.
Running .net framework 2.0 serv. pack 1
    This is upgradable ????

What does .NET have to do with Media Player? I have Media Player 10 installed on my Win XP SP3 system and have no version of .NET installed. I see no need whatsoever for it, as far as Media Player is concerned.

usafveteran suggests there is no need to update- XP sp3 can cause some changes, and I suggested the .net update as it is needed on some programs now, and sp3 does mess some older programs up, other than reverting to sp2, perhaps usafveteran can offer you the answer.

I made no comment specifically about SP3. I merely said I don't see that .NET is needed for Windows Media Player. At least, I don't have .NET and can use Media Player. I'm using version 10. I have SP3 installed.

USAFVETERAN---------The problem that needs solving for BurntOutBeatDown, who originally had WMP 9 installed when he updated to sp3, and then found it worked differently to before he updated to sp3.
In some of Microsofts links, that I read through, when I have the urge, Microsoft has stated that .net versions may be needed, as some programs might need it, or, not work (properly) without it.
Perhaps, usafveteran can offer a registry fix.
My registry knowledge is a little limited.:duck

Thanks Mark, that was the sort of thing that I meant, and I hope it solves
    BurntOutBeatDown's question.
