I would like some advice on choosing an anti-malware programme, please.

I used to be daft enough to purchase things such as McAfee and Norton products.

Then I discovered Majorgeeks and learned about good, freeware anti-malware programmes.

I've since been persuaded on here since I acquired Windows 7 to use Microsoft's free anti-malware programme, Microsoft Security Essentials.

Now I've acquired a PC with Windows 8.1 (64bit) I'd like to ask should I stick with Microsoft Security Essentials, use Windows Defender or some other anti-malware programme.

I also have on my other machines the following, and am wondering if I should install them on my new one:

    • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
    • SpywareBlaster
    • SUPERAntiSpyware
or if they're superfluous to requirements.

I agree with JoeRay, the Windows Firewall, Defender, MBAM free and SpywareBlaster provide good protection for those who browse responsibly and observe the other basics about keeping safe, such as not clicking on unknown links or attachments in emails, checking all downloads and not plugging in flash drives from friends without scanning them first.

Thanks! Are they active by default or do they need to be turned on?

Hi, I don't want or mean to hijack this thread but I had the same questions when I recently got a new Windows 8.1 laptop. I installed the items mentioned in the thread. I also included CCleaner which I am sure all will agree is a good idea.

I also installed AVAST Free as my anti-virus software... is this not needed?

    Thanks for the feedback.

When you install a third party AV such as Avast then 8.1's Defender is automatically disabled. You use one or the other, not both, and the debate about which is best will go on forever ;)

I agree. I have CCleaner on all my machines.

As Earthling has said use one anti-virus programme only. If you don't you will probably end up with problems. The choice is yours. I've used Microsoft Security Essentials on my older machines and have had no problems. I'm happy to rely on Microsoft's Windows Defender on my Windows 8 machine.
