i'm not so concerned. I still praise Avast! far far far above Norton. I was a happy Norton customer for a couple years until I heard about Avast.

Avast may be a little slower with updating their definitions, but as SOON as they are released, every end-user with an internet connection has the update, much more efficient than Norton ever was IMO.

Also, by using the combo of Avast!, Ad-Aware, and Spybot (accompanied by a good firewall--I use Kerio) my system is much cleaner than even my techie friend's who try to stick to big names like Norton or Giant.

I use Avast, Kerio FW, Ad-aware and Spybot. Each in its own way has saved my bacon on many occasions. Therefore I would have to call into question the veracity of that report. Might it be for example that some big bucks were involved in coming to the conclusions listed. Nah - I stick with what I have and repay the freebie guys by recommending their products so that the professional versions they produce might be bought in greater quantities.
    Cheers All

    Hey Baz,

Like the rest of everyone, I use the same combo (with the exception of ZA as my firewall).

I have been very, very pleased up to this point.

I have been completely Malware free for a long time.

The only problem I'm having now is with the most recent update to Avast.

I hear you on the 38 reads - no responses.

I've bumped my thread twice to no avail.

I believe the most recent update added an extra service to Avast.

    It is: Web Shield.

I've had major slow down problems since the update.

I traced it to the Web Shield.

I've had to disable it - in order to be able to navigate web pages. It was taking up to 3 minutes just to view a post here.

It has some custom options, but since I'm ignorant - I've been waiting for some advice on what to do.

So, at this point - I disable it, and surf in the buff. I figure between my Firewall and the other Avast scanners, I'm still safe.

So far, all scans come up negative - but if anyone has any advice, please post it here (or dig up my old post - which has now been pushed onto page 3)

It is called, "connection and navigating slow down after update".

Other than that - I love logging on to the internet only to be told, "Virus database has been updated".

    Good stuff!

    All the best,

    LAIGo

Slightly off the subject while reparing a computer this week i ran ad-aware/spybot/avg/stinger all up to date versons
    stinger found one worm
avg found a version of the backdoor trojan
    spybot & adaware the malware/loggers
i then tried giant/ms spyware on it and it found 4 new malware/adware probs that had been missed by the 2 favourites of this board
my tips to the person's computer after were to use a diffrent browser (mozilla) this will prevent most of the adaware probs people have, since i changed spyware is a thing of the past
and to keep her giant,/microsoft spyware up to date
i have read reviews about giant being one of the best before ,someone posted a review on here and i think i came out on top then but i think this is going to be a very useful tool
ps.one thing to note if you have AVG alter the time it performs its update as eveyone's is set to the default of the morning and as this is such a popular product there servers have been jammed by the ammount of updates that have tried to be downloaded. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Thanks guys, for the well thought out replies. I have no axe to grind with any of the products quoted. I use ZA free and Avast and am happy with both. Any NOD32 users out there? Is it a one time fee or an annual fee for updates?

www.bloggeroff.com is run by the editor of the now dormant Australia's Internet Directory monthly hard copy mag (shame it is dormant). I contributed letters to the Editor, only. Blog is worth a read.

Using your head properly is great advice. Just now I had an email from someone I didn't know, but with the first name of a friend of mine, asking me to clip on a link and give them my "up-to-date addresses" so they could update their mailing list. Good try but delete was quickly actioned. Bazza

It's an annual fee for NOD32. But I'm not all that happy with it. I don't personally use it, the shop I work at installs it on machines with expired/no AV. You have to customize it in order to get that 100% and even then I'm not so sure about it. Before we found out about the customization being needed a computer came back with the same viruses it had came in and been cleaned with the first time. The support page IMHO is as bad as Norton's and just plain unfriendly. (suddenly feels better getting that off his chest) It may be a good AV program, its just I had a bad first experience with it and it never redeemed itself.

Thanks tux2460. Think I'll stick to Avast. Free and friendly, IMHO. Bazza

Ok here's mine.......... I used to use Norton. No more. 'nuff said about that. I now have PC-cillin Security. I also have AVG, Kerio, Ad-aware , a-squared, and CrapCleaner.. Currently I have AVG and kerio shut down to evaluate PC-cillin. Periodically I run Ad-aware and CrapCleaner to just to clean things up. Right now PC-cillin is doing a great job. After I am satisfied with how PC-cillin is handling things, I will shut it down and use only AVG and Kerio. After I have completed my testing (such as it is) I will make a decision of what to use for the future. Right now my comp seems as clean and troublefree as it has ever been. Even tho I said 'nuff said about NAV, I will add.. I am delighted to get rid of this resource hog.

Norton Anthi-Virus (2003) also updates as soon as you get an internet connection. This is the option "Enable auotmatic LiveUpdate (recommended)". This option can ve turned-off but is on by default. I think the main issue with Norton is that it tries to be "all things to all men" and thus has a lot of excess baggage from past variants, which may well contribute to the product's resource hogging.

  14. I think I'm pretty much in the same boat as a lot of you. I use to run PC-cillin then tried Norton Pro and it had found 3 nasties, so I opted for Norton but didn't renew because I found it was a resource hog and I didn't like the fact that it only had updates available on Wednesday’s when I had it, anyways (although Norton did update more when something big hit the internet). At the same time I figured I'd try something free for a change tried a bunch of them, finally came across Avast, I've been using it for about 2 years with no complaints (updates more than twice a week at least). I also use Kerio, ad-aware, Spybot and recently started using spyware blaster. I must admit however that I occasionally use Norton, trend micro and F-secure's on-line scans and so fare Avast hasn't let me down. Finally, no offence to Maxwell intended but as for configuring Norton to update on start up, you can update all you want, if the definitions are only there once a week  ...Well, that's my reason for using Avast (Free edition). But if Norton does it for you than that's great.

P.S. if anybody has comments about Spywareblaster, I'm all ears. :D

I've been running it over a year and have not had any problems since with ActiveX crap. Even Patrick Kolla (Spybots author) recommends using it. It uses no resources as it doesn't run in the background. Good piece of software.

I run AVG7, Spywareblaster, SpybotS&D and ad-aware and have never had a virus, been hacked or any problems with spyware. These products will do me and their price is right. :)

Only virus I ever had was introduced onto my system way back in the mid 90's and that was via a floppy.
