Anti Virus help please

Hello Everyone-

I'm new to this site, so if this post is in the wrong place please let me know. I am not new to computers however.

I am currently using Avast antivirus free version. The problem is AvastSvc.exe accesses my HD a lot, *even on sites (like Netflix) I have whitelisted*. My questions are: Is this really necessary? Is there any way to get it to stop doing that? Failing that, can anyone recommend a free AV that doesn't do this?

I'm old school, and yes I know things have changed and are always changing, and AV is important. But I don't understand why it's still accessing my HD on whitelisted sites.

AvastSvc.exe is a core service of Avast antivirus and could be engaged in other tasks that involve disk access while
you are actively accessing the internet.

Assuming that you have the latest version, Avast Free Edition 8.0, and that you have installed the Web Shield and that it is RUNNING,
there are adjustments available within the Web Shield settings.
URL's, MIME types and processes can be added with the Exclusions dialog.
You can also adjust Web Scanning and the Sesitivity setting.

My choice is to use the default settings, since this is a primary function of antivirus protection.
