What do you recomend, i used to use avg 7.5 which was fine , but since the arrival of Ver8.0 it seems to be a little sluggish and has other features i dont want/ need

Which would you say is the best free scanner thats fairly light on resources, and which would you say is worth paying for.

Again both that dont hog resources

    Thanks

Although I have been using AVG for several years with no problem (presently I am using 8.0), I know that many people here at MG prefer Avast. Also I have heard good things about Avira.
All these and many others are available here:

I found Avast and Avira took a bit more resources on my older PC and choose AVG 7.5 for that reason. I'm not sure if the 8.0 is as resource hungry now as those two, but both are good AV's.
I use Avast now and like it.

I've been using Avira AntiVir for years, about 4 years now, and I've never had problems with it using resources or slowing down my PC (the older version had some problems with Windows 2000 but that's been straightened out AFAIK). And it's free, so you really have nothing to use by installing it for a week or so and see how things go. The one thing I don't like about Avast (I haven't used it in awhile so I don't know if it still does this) but whenever it performed a task like updating the virus database, a voice would holler "VIRUS DATABASE HAS BEEN UPDATED!" and it would scare the bejeezus out of me!

yes i recently put on antivir, the odd pop up after a update slightly annoys me , so was considering buying unless there was better.

But again when u buy it u get all the crap like was on avg 8

I didn't like avg 8 so I just switched to Comodo free version. No issues so far.

Hmm my very first post, but I just went to Avira AntiVir Personal and it seems to work fine. The notifier popup is annoying, but that only happens once a day if you schedule your virus update once a day. I even went to far as to put in a .bat file to rename the notifier.exe and once I rebooted, the next day, I peeked and the bugger made another one... so... I am just gonna live with it.. as it is free and does not slow my system down.

I used to use Avast and never had problems with it either. The only reason I changed was so I could become familiar with software that was more user friendly as I do some tech support on sites and I needed to become familiar with the interface to teach real noobs on how to use the software.

Good luck, but I think either Avast or Avira are fine, depending on your user level of experience.

    Howdy All~~
