Hi Oliver, I have moved your thread from Malware removal as its a closed forum to posters that are not part of the Malware removal/Admin team, so you would only get a few responses, all good ones mind, but I thought it best to open the question out to the rest of the group ;)

Personally I now like AVAST Free, I used to run McAfee Enterprise as old company gave me licence and as I dont work for them now, so I needed new AV, I have to say I'm pleased with Avast.

a couple of good links and guides from our site for you....

I am very happy with avast! ran both Norton and TrendMicro and, from my experience, Avast is the best.

well the best antivirus is NOD32 but that costs money, for the best free nothing can beat avast, i have been using it for 4+ years and its kept me virus free.

To be honest the best Anti Virus is user common sense as I have used many various AVs and have never been infestated with a virus or malware, but agreed NOD32 is one of the best if you wish to pay, but I do find Avast or AVG both very good free solutions, if combined with user dilligence and some antispyware and firewall protection, you'll will be fine.

Learn your enemy... basics are dont open emails of whom you dont recognise, download only from recognised/legit sites, if you use p2p then your open to all sorts of crap! and thats the risk you alone take, use a 2 way firewall ( one that looks at both incomming and outgoing traffic ) it will alert you to what apps want outgoing connections, so research what asks for an outgoing connection before you allow it. Finally dont click any popup messages that say you are infected with spyware.. click here to remove!

I've used Nortons for yrs. and I switched over to NOD 32 about 3 months ago. I really like it and it's not a resource hog like the others esp. Nortons.

I have used AVG free for about 2 years without any problems. Now that Zone-Alarm offers a free version I have paired the two. The protection is great and the cost can't be beat.

Of course Halo makes great points, nothing is better than knowledge and common sense.

I went with AVG+Firewall, not free, but not expesnive for a 2 year license. Like it a lot and the folks at Grisoft are really there when we have guestions.

    Have a good day,

Avast for me. Tried NOD 32 then went back to avast and the first scan came up with a virus NOD missed.

I have used AVAST free for 3 year now, and am very pleased with it. Before that I used Norton anti-virus, but got tired of the cost and the bloated nature of the software. I actually think AVAST works better then Norton - and AVAST has a very small foot-print.

The best AV is Mcafee Virusscan.
But it's not free unless you go ilegal.

As one of the many using Avast for well over two years can you please qualify that statement a little more. What do you mean by 'not load right'.
What OS are you running and what other programs are firing up on Startup please??
    Cheers

Nod32, Scans very fast, very high detection rate, very light on resources, not very expensive.

 i finally am getting avast to work but i had to remove counterspy to do it. why does avast stop when it finds something? that's annoying...

know what you mean. It should just quarentine it and continue scanning, pain in the but if you walk away while its scanning and it find something, come back an hour later and find that its only 1/4 the way through because you didn't acknowledge that it found something, but in saying that its still the best AV i've found

Jim and I have used AVG for many years now. It has kept us, and the files we list here, squeaky clean. Anti-virus can be a tricky area. You need to weigh cost, resources and obviously detection quality and come up with what works best for you, along with what I call "safe surfing" which can be the best prevention of all. I have repeatedly mentioned NOD32 is not for the novice. Where it fails is in simple configuration. Otherwise, if your comfortable, its a great shareware choice.

Certified products can at least narrow down trustworthy products:

Avasta is my personal favorite. Had problems with Mcafee and Avast is free.
