    You usually do hear that.
From people that have a vested interest in them.

    I find ZoneAlarm adequate.
Although I have heard that there are better choices.
Unfortunately ZoneAlarms best release is no longer available.
Because of that I keep a 2001 version on hand for the 98SE I duel boot.
And for XP I use the in built firewall.

The latest incarnations of ZoneAlarm or Norton (as with many firewalls and anti virus) are so over bloated that they can eat away at all but the most robust processors.
And you get very little in return.

I suggest AVG free and up for a good source for AV...
I keep and early version of ZoneAlarm for 98SE and will work with XP.

    I suggest you read this:

most around here will say stick with AVG,AVAST, or NOD32

zonealarm uses the same antivirus as CA (witch is not too bad) , and Norton is Bloatware.

on the plus side AVG and AVAST can be used for free.
NOD32 is pretty cheap and is highly rated ( because it scans so fast and works so well, but on the bad side it's a little hard to configure for beginners)

but what ever you do try to stay away from Norton it's just to hard on your system and it's hard to get rid of when you want to.

    later.

I've used Zone Alarm Firewall for about 4 years now and haven't had any problems and it is free!!

Norton AV and Firewall is such a system resource hog it is rediculous!! And it cost a yearly subscription!!

I've also used AVG on my system and others that I have repaired, and everyone I know loves it!! It is 100% free, easy to use, and doesn't eat memory like norton does!!

Your bad experience with AVG was probably related to you getting a brand new virus that had not had a definition for it yet...that can happen to any AV software. Unfortunately the virus has to happen before they can make an adequate fix...and that's not talking about hueristic approaches which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. You were just one of the unfortunate guinea pigs for that virus that you got and couldn't get rid of!!

And Windows Firewall...well...I guess it is better than nothing, but it is actually pretty much useless!! It only protects inbound traffic, so if you do get a piece of malware on the system, and ET wants to phone home from your PC...XP firewall will do nothing for that!!
