I keep getting the message that my free avg is going to be discontinued in January and it talks about a new free version but when I go to there home page all I can find is payware. Anybody know what I need to do?

Just go to the MajorGeeks download area and you'll find it there under "Anti-Virus". Or visit the Grisoft site, click on "Products" on the left and scroll all the way to the bottom.

I knew I could do that but I thought it would be the one that I have now.
If that is the new one then fine I will do it. Thanks for the help

My co-worker told me yesterday that AVG is not going to be freeware anymore which was a bit of a surprise to me. He wondered if I knew of any other free antivirus software out there so I told him about Avast!, AntiVir, and ClamWin (the Windows GUI for Clam Antivirus).

I only know how the latter two run, but not the first since you have to give the software company your information in order to email an unlock key for the free antivirus which I haven't done and not worried about.

So you are right that AVG will no longer be free as of January. Good luck!

    Hi,
British, I use Avast, and the only real thing you have to give them is an email address. They have never mailed me except to update once a year. You could give kermit the frogs name and they would be ok with it. I recon they just want your name and stuff incase you need help with there product. If you can remember that you used kermit as a name all is well:D.
Avast has done me well for years.
I havent tried the others though.
Oh, also there is also no limit to the amount of accounts off one email either.
    cheers

Not true...the current free version is 7.1; 7.5 has been released, is also free and is an upgraded free version, better scanning, etc. Support for 7.1 ends in January and assumes people will download the upgraded free version.

Hey, thanks for the information. I wondered if anyone else used Avast. Now I know what to look for when I recommend free antivirus programs.

I've used Avast for several years too and love it. I have loaded it on the laptop, the desktop, my son and my daughter's PCs. Works great :D

I would also suggest that you look at Avast free also. In my opinion a very much superior product altogether.

I am in the process of finding replacement AV+FW for my wife's pc but cannot use Avast as she still uses Win98SE. Avast has the disappearing icon issue with 98SE.

I did try AVG but received the same 'advise' message, however although v7.1 worked ok v7.5 crashed the system during scans.

I did have a look at AntiVir but the free version has the nag screen that is really irritating, although I may try out AntiVir premium without the nag screen.

I am currently looking at Bit Defender AV 10. Although it's not free, it is very slick and has so far had no issues with the o/s.

    Good Luck

I use Avast on my Lap top with 98 SE with no problems, and no dissapearing icon:confused:. Ive never heard of that problem actually. Its a little slow, but then again it is only a whopping 266MHz with 64 megs of RAM..hehe:eek:
