Do any of you gurus have any info or opinions on the quality of the antivirus Sbc/yahoo is offering in their new online protection package.

LIke is it better, worse or comparable to avg free.

    Thanks for you input

Does it come on their dsl install disc? If so, I would find the file via explore
this disc, and install it seperately. And then setup you internet
connection manually. I would not install that whole disc. I don't trust it.
Yahoo tells you on the license agreement that they WILL use
    your personal information.

no, it doesn't come with their install disc. I don't use their browser or anything, i got an email from them to go and download their protection package popup blocker, antispuyware, and antivirus.

I have a dsl router from them and don't use any of their software that I dont need.

I installed it on my oldest computer, just to see what it was about.
I just wondered if anyone knew anything about it. who makes it, stuff like that.

Not sure about the rest of the Security package, the AV is Computer Associates eTrust EZ Anti-Virus. Many people are running it and like it. Personally I don't use it.

I see. I always wondered what were in those sbc emails that
I delete all the time... :D

I've used etrust. Its good stuff, with a small footprint. My subscriptiom ran out, so I'm using avast for now.

I also had a q about this anti virus software. I have researched it and get nothing solid on it. Is it better than the free software virus programs. I use anti vir right now, and used avast (stopped cause it slowed my older pc). So anti vir or etrust?

etrust is made by computer associates, which specializes in business security products.

So, yeah, I would hope its excellent :D

    Its not free, however.

I believe it is free for those who have SBC Yahoo DSL Service :)

No it's not free, you must subscribe to continue using it.

Either way, is etrust better than anti vir, security wise.

Personally, I would say that AntiVir is the better of the two.

  13. I have the sbc program. It is very good and yes if you do have a verizon dsl subscription you do get all of that for free. But normally you would have to buy it. Its small, its quick, and has solid protection i would use it over avast any day.

You get it free for 1 year, then you got to pay.

  15. Nah its free free. It is included in the price of the dsl service.

Now, that is nice. More Broadband providers should follow the example of SBC/Yahoo.

Cox did. They have a spam/firewall/antivirus/parental control program for free. I don't particularly care for it, but it does do its job.

I prefer etrust, due to Computer Associates track record. To each their own, of course.

Time Warner, provides it free for 1 year to Road Runner suscribers.

  22. Only one con I have with the program. For some odd reason when it has to restart to complete an update it does not tell me. It will just fail the next update untill i reboot the computer. Other than that i love it even more so now realizing that it is made for quality scince the company makes this software for corporate users. As for their parental controls, and browser i hate it. It is very buggy and when i try to clean it up from the registry level the whole thing goes crazy and will not work right until those lines are fixed. But their security center is very solid and i like what i see in it.

I installed their shield with the anti virus and anti spy and pop up blocker. The e-mail thing is useless unless u use their browser. The pop up really doesn't seem that significant but in truth i have not had a popup when using their browser, even on sites where i get one in firefox. So i gotta give the pop up some props. As for teh anti spy I say that actually suks cause I still don't think it can be better than ad aware and spyware blaster, also spybot. While i use the latter two i don't use the last one right now- or don't use spybot right now.
As for the anti virus i used to use avast but it took to many resources so switched to anti vir after i did a clean install on my pc and it ran well. I had used Anti vir before and i just didn't trust it. Now it turns of the guard if i run another program with it that uses significant system resources so I had my reasons to want to switch again there. I am trying out the ca and in comparision to the speed of full system scan it runs slower - it could just be meticulous, not 100% sure. I think it might be better in my opinion.

Hi there , just a note on the sbc/yahoo antivirus. I installed all this in july o5, along with zone alarm. Problems arose as soon as I uped SP2. With in a week had a virus/trojan/worm thing (still unidentified) that crashed my intire system. Had to reformat, reload wxp etc. while researching what the problem was I finally came upon this little hidden note from microsoft: Programs that are known to experience a loss of functionality when they run on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884130#appliesto

seems that SP2 wipes out a mess of your anti virus protections, and if you opt to not accept auto update, then your basically screwed, cause it leads you to believe that your safe, when in actuality you have no protection at all! how I fixed this was to keep the popup/spyware parts of the sbc browser and covered my PCs butt at home with Nortons. The email is auto covered in yahoo and the nortons covers the OLE here at home. I havent reloaded SP2 yet, am all most afraid to after this last nightmare. What do you think Geekguys, do I Really NEED sp2?

Yes, you need Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. SP2 does not wipe out your system protection, if you had bothered to read the instructions before installing SP2, you would have known to update your drivers, software, and make sure the system was Malware/Spyware/Virus free; before installing SP2.

SP2 was not the reason why your system got infected. The email is not auto covered by Yahoo, so much spam and other juck gets through their filters it's not funny. If you are still using Outlook Express for email that is another part of the problem.

Without Service Pack 2 installed your system is a serious security risk, and will become infected again. Most of today's viruses target unpatched (pre SP2) XP systems, you reaaly need to install SP2.

I also upgraded to sp2- i went form win 98 to upgrade to xp then sp1 and sp2. When i did i did have a crash cause everything slowed and programs wouldn't load. I checked for viruses and spyware and found nothing under my zonealarm, spybot, adaware, spwareblaster, avast, antivir system- done before the upgrade. I even used a nod anti virus trial to check up my system. I agree though it is probably the drivers but could be hidden stuff that conflicts too. I ended up just doing a clean install but as soon as i installed xp i used the sp2 upgraded then went to ms and upgraded for protection. In all honesty, i haven't had a problem since. It doesn't hang or malfunction like before. I also upgraded drivers after this, oh and I did upgrade my bios before the clean install, but now know i wouldn't do it cause it could be bad. JUst my experience! ;)

Thank you so very much guys! I will take your advice to heart. And apologise about the question at the end there Shadow Puter Dude; was originaly only going to express my discovery and sad experiance, when the thought crossed my mind that it would be a good idea to ask an expert. I am a pure newbie about the mechanics of PCs and the advice about drivers and bios i'm afraid are over my head. I dont have a clue what that means. BUT, I shall continue to read up and educate myself on the subject. Again Thank You! am headed to the two threads you suggested right now! Remaining your gratefully embarrased Tinkertoy
