Hello, I am Ginger and am glad you are all here.

I have installed AntiVir about a year ago and then received new antivirus protection from my DSL. Now I am back to dial up. I cannot download AntiVir again, because it detects that I have some files left over from the previous download. Can anyone help me overwrite or delete the old files so I can have the best antivirus program download?

    Many thanks,
    Ginger

    Hello Ginger,

As it is always best to run only one antivirus app., please go to Control Panel/Add/Remove Programs and delete the old program. Then download this,
    http://majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No_Yahoo_Toolbar_English_d4191.html,
and install it. Select the issues option and click on it. This will scan your registry for unused keys/entries. Hope this helps!:)

Just a side note to the Novice's post it seems that if you use the "Uninstall" that comes with the program that it does a better job of deleteing more of its files than if you use the "Control Panel", at least that has been my experience, and yes CCleaner is a must now

Dang almost forgot WELCOME TO MAJOR GEEKS MissVA/Ginger

Thank you for the help! It's good to know someone can help me with this. However, when I click on the download URL, the program will not work. Is there a better / easier way? When I right-mouse click on it, it gives me an error message.

When you click on the download link the program will not work? Does it download ...is it downloading to your desktop ...does it finish the download? What is the error message .....
Have you done a search for antivir on your computer and deleted anything it finds?

Hello again. I have been very busy tonight.
I downloaded CC Cleaner, but 690 problems found, 429 restricted, 261 repaired without having to register.

Tried to download AntiVir again. Got this message:

"The AntiVir Upgrade Assistant recognized that the deinstallation of the Version 6 of the AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic was not successful. There are still important entries in the registry. Reason for this can be an activated monitoring program for the registry. Please deactivate this program if necessary and/or permit the AntiVir Upgrade Assistant to access the registry. Then there is an OK button. I clicked on the OK, everything to do with the AntiVir program disappeared.

Then got a message from Microsoft. "Upgrade.exe had detected a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Please tell Microsoft about this problem - Send Error Report, Don't Send. I sent it anyway.

I would appreciate any help in getting this AntiVir program on my computer. Thanks for all your help to get me this far. Novice I am.

Ginger did you run CCleaner by clicking on the "Issues Icon" which is the second icon, the first one only cleans your "Temp" files and not your "Registry Files"..........if you are cleaning the "Registry Files" a prompt will come up asking if you want to make a "Back-up File" click yes and it will create one for you, and then will sound a tone and ask are you sure. Hope that Helps, and hey when it comes to new software were all novices to begin with, Keep posting

Hi Again! Got to get some anti-virus on this pc! Soon?

Ok, first the program is called Registry Mechanic.
There is no icon that has 'Issues' on it
    So sound.

If I can't fix this, is there another antivirus program I can download?

    Ginger,

Your post confuses me. I checked the download link that I provided and it was for CC Cleaner, and you don't have to register as it is freeware. There should be no restricted registry entries using CC Cleaner, at least I've never encountered any!

You mentioned Registry Mechanic which is a shareware program that likely allows you to use it in a limited capacity, such as fixing only a limited amount of the problems found until it is purchased.

Were it me, I would uninstall Registry Mechanic using its uninstall rountine and then run CC Cleaner and click on the "issues" tab that BCGray mentioned. This should delete all orphaned keys and entries in the Registry. Tim W also provided some sound advice, in that a search for antivir entries should be done.

That being said, here are two antivirus apps. that most of the MG users use and recommed, http://majorgeeks.com/Avast_Home_Edition_d1968.html, and
    http://majorgeeks.com/AVG_Free_Edition_d886.html. Hope this helps.:)
