You should really uninstall Norton completely.

Why do you want to keep it?

If it's an "older" version, you can use the Norton Removal Utility, otherwise use Add/Remove.

If you still want to keep Norton, go into Options and uncheck all the protection then reboot, however I would still recommend complete removal.

Unistall Norton Completely. 2 AV PRGS on the same computer often conflict with each other, even when 1 is disabled.

Norton does not always completely uninstall itself. Follow the instructions in this article from Symantec.

I'm not sure that you can turn off Norton's because it is so deeply entrenched in the operating system. Given the choice between Norton and Avast, I would choose Avast, as it isn't the resource hog that Norton is. I was a long time Norton user but converted to Avast because of the Norton 2004 activation addition. I feel that if I buy and pay for something that I shouldn't have to activate it in order to use it. I still have the unopened Norton 2004 package in my bookcase. :)

Hello Novice, yes Norton is difficult to unistall. If it doesn't uninstall completely from Add/Remove Programs in the Control panel SymNRT or Rav2003 will do the trick. Which one you use depends on the version of Norton you have.

If you really want to do it.You must turn of the norton services in control panel>administrative tools>services.Stop it in msconfig.

As everybody else says it is a bad idea,if you have two antivirus at a time it can hang the comp.

You should only do this if you want norton back in the future.
