antivirus or internet security software

What is the best free virus protection or internet security program that is better than Norton because im tired of paying them and still getting viruses and now they charge you crazy like Microsoft. I know that there is a list of them here on the sit but could someone share their experiences with any of them and maybe suggest some. I read some treads but a lot were based on years ago. Is the decision going to be based on my computer.
