Antivirus programs crashing

Every single anti-virus program I run, crashes. This includes McAfee 4.5, Panda ActiveScan, AVG 6.0, F-Prot 3.15 and Bitdefender. I can't find a pattern to these crashes, they always happen while the program is scanning a different file.

I've run Scandisk and defragged the hard drive to no avail. I've also ran Ad-aware and Spybot S&D. As far as I can tell, nothing else is crashing - the reason I wanted to run a scan in the first place, is because when I boot in Safe Mode, the hard drive activity light never turns off (it turns off in normal mode).

My specs:
Windows 98
AMD Duron 1.3ghz
512mb DDR
80gig hard drive

 

I ran the Trend Micro scanner, both the online and offlines versions - they both crashed. I installed and ran Avast - it found 2 trojans and crashed, but then after I ran it again, it completed the scan without crashing. This didn't seem to have any noticeable effect.

As I said in my original post, I already ran both Ad-aware and Spybot.

 

Have you uninstalled (or disabled) McAfee so you don't have 2 antiviruses running? (just wanted to note this - I know there's more to your problem)

Also, do you remember the names of those 2 trojans that Avast found? Since it got rid of them -- they might have been part of the problem.

 

I think at least one of the trojans that were removed was named something like W32. I ran Avast without McAfee running.

The errors differ - sometimes it's the BSOD, sometimes it's a general protection fault, but most of the time there is no error message - it just locks up. I ran it safe mode, and it just froze and I had to reboot.
