Antivirus programs

OK, I've really had it with NAV, particularly the 2004 version. I had nothing but troubles since I installed it and now it refuses to behave with my newly installed Audigy2 zs sound card. ( auto protect won't activate )

So..... I was wondering if anyone 'round here tried any of the freebie programs listed on this site, i.e. Avast or AntiVir and what are your thoughts.

Try this. http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php I use the paid avg 7.0 network edition and have never had any problems. I think it is great software. But I have never tried the free version. Hope this helps.

 

THere are quite a few threads in here regarding that very question, do a quick search, and you'll find tons of info.

Since I'm here, AntiVir, AVG, and Avast are all good programs, with Avast leading the popularity contest here at MG. The new AVG version 7.0 seems a bit sluggish for some users, me included, so I made the jump to Avast, but others are happy with the new 7.0.

The choice is yours.

Just to note.........I have used AVG (free version)and so has daughter and son. Works well. Never tried Avast but hear good things about it. Couple that with Ad-aware and CCleaner and you've got a good thing going. Rememver to get a good firewall. XP has one built in but not totally sufficient. When you add a firewall, disable Xp's firewall. Zonealarm and Kerio are good firewalls with free versions. I prefer Kerio. Now all that said, I use PC-cillin for both AV and FW. But may revert to free versions when I need to reorder. Lot of personal preferences involved here.
