    Hello,

Can some kind soul please advise if there is any effective antivirus software which meets the following constraints.

    1) Is able to install in the Windows 98Se :-o operating system environment
    2) Still can update - effectively updates over the net or can be set to a schedule - as long as it can update then that is o.k
    3) Is Free

    Thanks

My old 98SE has a version of Avast which still self-updates regularly. I'll boot it tomorrow and post the version.

    Hi guys,

    Thanks alot for the effort(s).

I too eventually found Bitdefender 2009, which claims to be for all versions of windows...

I was just going to post back here what I had found, for anyone else whom may find themselves in a similar scenario.

hrlow2 you and I appear to have the same thought process on this one, cheers again.

    Consider this one resolved. :)

You can use the following programs for windows 98se which are free.

    Avast Antivirus
    Clamwin Antivirus
    Bitdefender Free Edition
    Multi Virus Cleaner 2009.

All these work on windows 98se but you will need to find a older version of Avast Antivirus as the latest one only works on Windows XP and upwards.

    Hope this helps

I know you said "Consider this one resolved." But thought you might want to take a look at avast 4.8. It's still available from Alwil here:

    http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download#tab4 and provides real-time protection.

Scroll about 2/3rd of the way down the page to the avast! 4.8 Home Edition (old product) section. As Earthling pointed out, it is still supported, but for how much longer...?

    Edit:

    Beat me to it sexyandy81.

Yes, agree with going with avast 4.8 Home Edition. One of the moderators on their forums has mentioned support till mid 2010. But there is still speculation, that support may get extended up to Dec 2010.
Both Bit Defender free and Clamwin free are scanners and offer no real time protection.

Just booted the 98SE museum piece and yes, it is Avast 4.8 and it has just updated itself to virus database 100311-1 dated 11/03/2010 - that's March 11 not November 3 ;)
