There are a number of different anti-virus softwares.I personally use Norton Antivirus and update it-I recently used BitDefender and loved it--as a XP professional home user -my question is how to pick the right one--
What kind of package should i opt and why?

Well since you tried Norton and BitDefender which one do you like most? The better one is BitDefender but Norton is right up there as well. So you cant go wrong in picking between those two ;)

As to what package, well options come down to wether you want to pay or not, plus are you happy with how the software works for you, if you don't have any virii infections then fine it works for you, keep it.

We all have different views on AntiVirus apps and what works for me may not be what you want or works for you.

AntiVirus software is just one part of the security puzzle, other things needed are listed in this GREAT thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44525

From my perspective, I don't visit any strange sites, download any software that I am unsure of, and rarely get any junk mail that I open. Thus, the majority of anti-virus programs were basically all the same for me in terms of protection. In my experience I've used Symantec Corporate Anti-virus for about 4 years, then I switched to NOD32 for a year, and have since switched to the free version of AVG. My opions of each are as follows:

Symantec - very bulky and problematic...seems to make windows startup slower. Scanning entire system takes forever.

NOD32 - very slick interface, takes little resources, and scans insanely fast even with deep heuristics turned on.

AVG free - very nice for a free program. no complaints of it yet.

If I could afford it, I'd roll with NOD32, but you have to subscribe every year and I have better things to do with my money.

Exactly people have different opinions but still if i have to do a comparision b/w the two either Norton Anti - or TrendMicro what would it be ==advantage over the other=as free and as purchased packages----
N yes Norton has its own issues-----
    May be they all do

Im gona take a stab at this but its hard to understand...so..... im not a big fan of Trend Micro but Norton does provide good protection againest viruses etc and internet attacks. In detection wise Norton beats Trend. But it wouldnt hurt to try Trend and see if you like it. They are both paid software.....
