    Hi,
I've been helped in this Forum several times regarding malware issues and will continue to thank those who have assisted me...
    :grouphug
For the last few weeks I've been cleaning up my laptop [per recommendations in your Forum threads] due to slow boot, a little slow everything; programs acting 'out of sorts'... just can't describe it better. Did the "Run & Read Me First Malware Removal Guide" .. because it's my go-to manual, lol; and I use all the programs designated anyway... but really just a few tads of junk.

Updated my Tweaking.com and went through ALL the steps for that and may have to send him a note because I'm still getting chkdsk errors even after going through all the "what ifs" and turning things off and down, etc.

Anyway... the purpose of this at the moment [and I may be in the wrong Forum, so please direct me] is to find out if you have a list of recommended Antivirus programs [listed in order of MajorGeeks recommendations] somewhere on the site. I had installed a licensed version of Kaspersky that came with my laptop when purchased, which I've now uninstalled. I'm running Avira - but I'm not that thrilled with it... and yes, I'm looking for Freeware, hopefully, because I believe there's probably something out there that's worth it ... ???
    :(
I know in the 'Run & Read Me First' there's a Firewall program list sorted that way; but I've looked around and haven't found one sorted like that for Antivirus.

Thank you, in advance, for your help,
    Cher

I believe this is the list you are looking for? :)

... Actually I've used that list previously but see it's been Updated - Yippee!
    :clapOkay
I see that the Categories of software are listed alphabetically, but I wonder if the titles are listed in order of recommendation/preference. For example, the 4 listed under Anti-Virus Protection are all rated 5 of 5 when I pulled them up. But... is there any way to tell if Microsoft Essentials would be better than AVG or the same?

    Thanks again!
    Cher

    Hi

Microsoft Essentials is getting a bit old and not keeping up with others sadly, so AVG I would say in tests is better, but not as good as the free versions or AVAST (Avast allows you to custom the components for install and I would only install the ones you really think you need, so if you don't use P2P then don't install that shield, similar to everything bar the core components) or a current fav of mine Panda

Panda is a cloud based offering so its always upto date as you can be in anti-malware, but the options to use are what you like graphically and with good usability, but anti-virus is only half the story as I always say PC security is alot of things from update windows and apps always, safe surf and download etc

DO remember to fully uninstall a previous antivirus before installing new as many do not play well together and may slow your PC down. I use a site similar to Eldon posted above but this one http://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/

    Hi David and many thanks!

What you say is interesting, because some of the comparison charts I found at first listed it [MSES] as recommended, but then I discovered they were older comparisons and not updated - which was one of my reason for the post.
    ;)
And yes, I already realize that AV is only part of it - thank goodness I've been a part of this community - and a follower of "MajorGeeks" for many years - literally, I'd like to know when they started, because it was a ... okay, I'll stop now, hehe. And I've had to do the "Run & Read Me First" Protocol for Malware. And once you've had to do that ... twice - you learn fast!

Thanks for the advice on uninstalling first - I did wonder about that.

Since we're on this discussion.. I'm on a wireless network connection [home-based], boyfriend has the other computer... I saw mentioned in one of the MG articles about router Firewalls. Do I automatically assume that the hardware has it?
    :-D
...or more realistically, how do I check?

I'm investigating Firewalls also, or looking into Suites - uncertain. One of the things I don't like about Avira AV is that it uses the Windows Firewall... which I know you can turn off & use another. The other is that I've gotten 'infiltrated', lol.. not invaded, but none the less.

When I went to the recommended link in the MajorGeeks malware forum -
    http://www.matousec.com/projects/proactive-security-challenge-64/results.php
These would appear to be some of the Free Firewalls I could look into {not certain if the versions are up-to-date}. If you have an opinion I'll listen to that also.

    Privatefirewall 7.0.30.3
    Outpost Security Suite Free 7.1.1.3431.520.1248
    ESET Smart Security 8.0.304.0

    Thanks again,
    Cher :cool

    Hi,

...and thanks for responding to AkrimRed.

;) I use Hitman Pro - it's already on my computer. As I mentioned in another reply ... after you've done the MG's "Run & Read Me First" Protocol for Malware, at least once, you learn fast.

    Thanks again,
    Cher :cool

    Hi Eldon,

:) Thanks! I'm checking the site out right ... N.O.W...
... and WOW, there are a lot of options to choose from for comparisons. Have you used this site previously - and I'm gonna go with a DUH here?

If I have any further questions regarding this, may I turn to you?

    Thanks again,
    Cher

I signed up for the newsletter from AV-Comparatives about 2 years ago. I'm notified everytime a new report is released.

Start by downloading the Real-World Protection Test in PDF form. They truly go the extra mile in testing the products.

    Hi Cher

Depending on what you have installed now there is normally an uninstaller tool from the maker to aid uninstalling as many softwares really do not uninstall fully and AVs are one that can cause issues if a few files are left over, which can cause your newer AV to not work.

What Make and Model router do you have and armed with that you can post the info here or read the tech specs, or enter the routers control panel and have a mooch around and look for Firewall settings, most are turned on by default and mange themselves ok for general use.

I have to say the Windows Firewall from Vista upwards is good and I just use the build in Windows one as adding more 3rd party tools, when built in tools will work ok, just adds more services and startups, which can slow your PC down.

To suggest a 3rd party firewall and I should of asked this in my first post, is what Windows version and Service Pack are you using?
