Thanks for the reply! My Spyware software is taken care of, and I am using the default firewall that comes with the XP sp2 download. I was wondering about the antivirus because my McAfee software expired.

Well the default XP firewall is a bit of a limp effort as it only block incoming traffic, but doesnt block outgoing data, so for arguments sake say you inadvertantly get a trojan it WILL be able to dial home as the XP FW will not block it.

you would be best advised to disable it and download a free firewall program that will cover you better ( outgoing and incomming )

    All FREE :)

glad you have the spyware aspect covered..... if you have SpywareBlaster then great if not get it now as it helps block spyware from being installed anyway http://www.majorgeeks.com/SpywareBlaster_d2859.html

also I forgot to mention A2 ( a-squaired ) can be used in conjunction with your main Antivirus program and give that extra scan for security as it looks for some nastys that your AV doesnt.

I would also recommend SpywareGuard which is a great addition to SpywareBlaster.

Speaking of AV software, does anyone know what script blocking is, and do Avast and AVG have script blocking? I"m just asking because I'm seriously thinking of switching from Norton to either Avast or AVG, but am not sure about how thorough they are. Any comments appreciated.

    D3m3nt3d,

Thanks. It sounds like AVG is the one to go with.

    Star17,

Thanks for pointing out that script blocking program. Will it run OK alongside the other AV programs like AVG and Avast? This starts to get confusing deciding which one is best and which one works with which one......ahhhhh!!

Great! Any suggestions on a firewall to top it all off with? Zone alarm or Sygate?

    I personally use Sygate....

I was thinking of using it, so thanks that's good to know. I'm specifically worried about online banking. Would the combo "Avast/Sygate/and the script blocker suggested by star17" be pretty good protection?

Then make sure you keep your spyware apps running also ;)

I use Sygate Personal Firewall Pro and it works good with my antvirus Nod32. So far it passed all the online firewall tests and has some good options to it. It is also very stable on my computer.
