There are several good Antivirus apps available for FREE download right here at MG: AntiVir, Avast, Comodo, and PCTools, are some that come to mind. AVG is also very popular, but in my opinion it has a less than stellar detection rate..... for spyware, check out Spyware Terminator or SpyCatcher Express by Tenebril Software. They're both great (and FREE!! ;) )

    BitDefender or Security Shield Antivirus?

I would like to know which one of these 2 would be a good choice? My fiancee is hell bent on getting one of these cause she has read about them in PCWorld and a few other magz. Thanks for your help..........

Only one of them I tried was Bitdefender. I was very pleased with it, easy to set up, low maintenance.

Security shield (as far as i can tell) is a complete security suite including spyware shield, firewall etc...but its not free and most probably nice and fat too!

Dont know alot about bitdefender, however there seems to be a free version that rates as 'good' (3.5 stars).

At any rate it is not only important to protect yourself and your expensive equipment online, it is also a must in keeping the fiancee happy!

Its your call, but Avast home edition ,freeware, is one of the best AV's going.... It provides more than adequate protection and updates regularly, has an excellent detection rate and a first class virus database, whilst remaining slim (not sucking your system dry).

Cause it costs money, doesn't necessarily mean its better!

    Regards....

When you say that your current AV is about to expire you don't mean AVG do you? If so it isn't about to expire it just needs updating from their website, the old free edition has been replaced by the 7.5 free edition.

The free version of BitDefender is a scanner only, it has no real-time protection to catch viruses before the get installed. I used to have it as a backup scanner, but it expired after a year (even though I hadn't downloaded it from the "trial version" link, it apparently was a trial version).

Thank you all for your responses and advice. The Antivirus we are using now is Norton and I didnt like it one bit. Of course its what they told her to get when she bought this computer about 2yrs ago. I renewed it once, but never again.

Have heard people say AVG is good, but havent tried it. Do most of the freeware have the rootkit, malware, adware, and active x controls on them? I myself read about BitDefender and Security Shield last nite and they both see to be fairly decent antivirus'. If there is something FREE and just as good then I will be the first to save some money.....hahaha.

Which freeware Antivirus is the best and not to hard to operate? Everyone one I talk to seems to rave about AVG. Is it as good as most say? Just trying to find the best protection for this computer cause my fiancee downloads every and anything with no regards.......hahaha. Thanks again for all your advice and advice to be given.
